“Good surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

We had lunch at the Cartuxa Restaurant, we stay there for 2 hours. The " wine and petiscos (that's the common Portuguese version of tapas) at Cartuxa's small, elegantly designed lounge/wine bar. The petisco menu runs to about 10 or 12 items, generally (though not exclusively) showcasing Alentejo produce & products...." the service was amazing and all the food. Good price, also de food and the place.

“Groovy little lounge”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2014

We didn't eat a meal at the Cartuxa Restaurant proper, but we spent a couple of very pleasant evenings hanging out and sampling the wine and petiscos (that's the common Portuguese version of tapas) at Cartuxa's small, elegantly designed lounge/wine bar.

The petisco menu runs to about 10 or 12 items, generally (though not exclusively) showcasing Alentejo produce & products. The menu seemed to vary slightly from what's shown on the website; we got the sense that it had to do with what's available locally and seasonally - just some minor adjustments in the name of freshness and regional flavour. The wines by the glass - something like 8 or 10 each of reds and whites - are also from the Alentejo region. (Evora is in the heart of the Alentejo, one of Portugal's largest and most notable wine regions).

Portuguese cuisine shares with Spain a love of, and expertise with, cheese and sausage; so (for us cheese and sausage lovers) of course the cheese and charcuterie plates were an easy and pleasing choice. Other menu highlights for us were the shrimp skewers, goat cheese/ham/fig jam on toasted bread, and especially the duck and marmalade. The wines aren't the very best of the region - this isn't meant to be a sommelier hangout - but the selection is good, and varied, and we had a fine time exploring and finding something to suit our tastes and menu choices. And the exploration was made that much easier by the prices: most wines under 4 euros a glass, and most petiscos between 3 and 7 euros. I don't know how that compares with other European venues, but compared to North America, it's a fantastic value.

Service was uneven, but we think this was more to do with the individual servers, and not a restaurant-wide issue. One night we had one of those lovely clunky interactions with a sincerely helpful server, where incomplete knowledge of each other's language led to a delightful evening of truncated grammar and impossibly expressive gestures; the other night we had a server who was much better with English (our primary language) but more drily efficient.

And a quick aside about one of the other things that appealed to us: this restaurant and lounge are situated in a complex of older (C16 - 19) buildings that have been (we think) sensitively restored, largely retaining the existing character on the exterior, but renovated in the interior with a sleek and subtle contemporary hand. If you like a groovy contemporary vibe, this place is very nicely detailed. And if you're interested in contemporary art, we suggest before or after visiting the gallery/museum adjacent - we saw two uncommonly good exhibitions there.

“Very Nice Experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2014

My companion and I really enjoyed our dinner at Cartuxa, even though we were the only guests there. The service (as you can expect when you are the only guests) was attentive. They created a special meal to accommodate my vegetarian diet. The pricing was reasonable. The selection of wines by the glass (including a selection of port wine) was good and the sommelier helpful and patient in finding a wine that each of us enjoyed. And the location is perfect - steps away from the Diana Temple. Give it a try!

“Worthy of a visit!”

We loved this restaurant! Food was excellent - and the presentation was beautiful! Location is perfect if you are staying at the Pousada dos Loios - just a block away. And we found the price very reasonable.

“So-so”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

Our hotel recommended this restaurant but we were disappointed with our meal.
The room is minimal in decor to the point of being inhospitable. The welcome from the staff was only a little better. As for the food; it was disappointing and without imagination.
The advice given about the choice of wine was simply incorrect.
We shall not be returning!
