This tapas restaurant and wine bar opened only a few months ago in the old city of Evora, a half block off the Rue da 5 de Octubre. Having been in Portugal a few days, my mother and I had already tired of the heavy, cream-based regional dishes. We don't eat meat, so it was a delight to find a menu with a variety of tasty and interesting vegetarian-friendly options. We ordered the tapas-sized roasted red peppers in a wonderful dressing, the Spanish potato tart, and the fried codfish, which was crunchy and flavorful. Although we drank only water with thoughtfully-provided lemon slices, the restaurant offered an extensive wine selection. The ambiance was calming, light, airy, and modern, with mellow background music and a kind, attentive waitstaff. I live in New York City, and of all the restaurants I ate at during my trip around Portugal, this is the one that seemed like it would stand the best chance of introducing Portuguese cuisine to an NYC audience. Piparoza is moderately-priced and comfortable, the food is just right for people like us who prefer a lighter diet, and overall this was one of the best meals of our Portugal trip.
