Évora is a beautiful town, and this hotel has an excellent location right in the heart of it -- well within the old town walls (meaning it's quite a maze to drive up to it). The hotel was clean and moderately comfortable. Appliances and plumbing generally worked fine. The breakfast, while pedestrian for international tourists, was fine. There's free WiFi in the hotel.
However, the rooms are truly "European", i.e., quite cramped. The old style lock-and-key door locks are a fire hazard and frequently took us five minutes to open to get in or out our first couple of days. There are no elevators, and the hotel is a flight up plus a possible additional flight higher depending on your room. The staff is relatively efficient. However, there are frequently employees who carry a scowl and look like they'd be happier someplace else.
But perhaps worst of all, and it's not entirely the hotel's fault, was the noise. Every 20 minutes throughout the night, from midnight until sunrise, our sleep was interrupted by a parading circus of different noises, all in succession: loud doves would cut in then out, people inside down the hall would talk loudly and the hotel walls would carry the noise throughout, and most of all you would hear the revelrie of the inebriated visitors to the town out on the street. It sounded like they were in your room. And I have never once before complained about street noise at a hotel before - even after staying in places with patios over busy Roman piazzas, Parisian boulevards, etc.
We cut our stay short here after a couple of nights because we had seen most of what we wanted to in Évora proper. But moreso, we left early so we could get a full night's sleep somewhere else.
