“Central, quirky, comfortable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2012

Excellent location with possibility of parking (at a charge) outside the hotel. An old convent with a labyrinth-line and gloomy interior, and the rooms are exceedingly high-ceilinged. I visited on a chilly wet day, but this would be a great advantage in the heat of summer. Well-appointed breakfast room with a good Portuguese breakfast - nothing fancy, but the usual unlimited rolls, toast, cereal etc. I can imagine that in the summer sitting out on the terrace for breakfast or evening drinks would be bliss. However, i have marked down the hotel slightly due to the quirkiness of the rooms, which might not be to everyone's taste.

We only stayed at Solar Monfalim one night. The beautiful building and incredibly convenient location made it worth the stay. The room was good, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom excellent. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Although our room did not have WiFi, it was available in the lobby area and on the beautiful, large front balcony area overlooking a lovely little square. For these reasons, I'm glad we stayed here on our one night in Evora.
Nevertheless, I only give this hotel three stars, based on several negatives that must be mentioned. First, the breakfast could charitably be described as barely adequate. We spent two months in Spain, Portugal and Morocco, and this was one of the worst breakfast we had anywhere. There wasn't much to choose from, and the coffee, such as it was, was almost undrinkable. There is no parking except a couple of spaces immediately in front of the hotel. We were lucky to get that parking space, and I'd hate to think of the trouble we would have had if we hadn't been so fortunate. Finally, there are a lot of stairs that must be negotiated just to get in the front entrance. This poses an obvious difficulty for anyone with a lot of luggage, or who has any difficulty with stairs.

I heard that this hotel was originally the home of a noble. Could almost picture that, but the bedrooms made me think "convent." White walls, high ceilings, windows that opened to a courtyard with a church just beyond. Swallows, lots of them, circling when the church bells sounded. Clean and comfortable beds and bath. Good breakfast. Hotel is pretty central to everything.

We stayed here in mid-October 2011 for one night. We were able to get to it by car with the help of our GPS. Without a GPS we might not have made it. Be aware that there are 22 significant steps to the main floor and no elevator. If you are not able to handle this climb with bags, don't stay here. The old town of Evora is not large and this hotel was a few minutes walk away from just about everything. The room was clean and spacious. The staff was quite friendly and helpful. Breakfast was fairly standard for Portugal but served in a very nice dining area.

The hotel is a bit old fashioned but ok. The building itself ist great and the decoration is lovely. Our room was big with a high ceiling and clean. The situation of the hotel is perfect for exploring the city, all sights are in walking distance. Parking space is limited, we couldn't park on the hotel parking but had to search for a public space. For us it was not a big problem because we just stayed for one night but for longer stays it might be annoying and expensive - the longer you stay, the more you pay!
Breakfast is only basic.

We've been a little disappointed by this hotel. The building is great (an old mansion) and the overall atmosphere is definitely worth a look. Staff is really friendly.

But that's where the good stuff ends: the overall style is really old fashioned, water pressure was super low in the bathroom, room was not acoustically isolated (we could hear our neighbors go to the bathroom in the middle of the night... lovely), TV was brand new but the signal was completely blurred, breakfast was disappointing and, on top of it, we had to pay a premium for the parking. For less than the 85 euros we paid we had much better experiences in Portugal.
