“Disappointing and Overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 13, 2013

Our "superior" accommodation was dungeon like. For seating, we had two arm chairs that had been placed in what had been a large fireplace: impossible to use since no head room. Room was located adjoining the noisy kitchen. Food was relatively ordinary. Only pluses were the beautiful church adjoining the Pousada and the Roman ruins near the entrance. The tab was that of a super deluxe hotel, which for what the Pousada provided was extremely overpriced.

We stayed in a 16th century monks apartment...renovated to provide today's expected comforts while retaining the ambiance of another era. Attention to detail is evident throughout the pousada; exterior and interior architecture true to original, interior common spaces tastefully decorated in period furniture. Avora, home to a university; and, accordingly, offers cultural/educational events. We were fortunate to witness the initiation of freshmen...parading through town with obligatory costumes depicting major field of study. Pousada Dos Loios is more than lodging, it is an experience.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your comments. They made us very proud.

Indeed we try to make every experience of our clients a unique one. Évora has lots of programms to offer to our clients from wine tastings, horse ridding to hot ballon riding. It all depends on what our clients would like to do.

I am glad you witness the initiation of the freshmen. They make a lot of noise, but it is something nice to witness.

Hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you once again in Pousada dos Loios.

Kind regards,
André Freire

Wel were with a group of 11 and we all loved it here. OUr rooms were comfortable and faced out to the inner courtyard and loggia where we met for drinks and cheese. The lobby was elegant and The hotel is within a 5 minute walk of all shops and the main square and Evora is a compact walking city with just enough to see in a full day. 4 of us craved pizza and found a cute pizzeria with a lot of atmosphere.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for your very kind comments. We appreciated very much.

The Pousada has a perfect location right in front of the Roman Temple and as you said, it is within a walking distance from all the major monuments and shops.

Next time you give us the pleasure of welcoming you once again and if you have another craving for pizza, let us know and we will try to make one just for you.

Kind regards,
André Freire

What a beautiful place to end our two week trip through Portugal. We stayed in the "king's suite" which consisted of a beautifully and ornately appointed living room, large bedroom and bathroom with a separate shower room. The private balcony overlooking a vine covered courtyard was a relaxing spot to unwind with a glass of wine at the end of the day.
Just steps from the pousada are ancient Roman ruins and the lovely village of Evora.
The hotel staff were very friendly and accommodating. We would definitely return and would recommend this pousada to anyone traveling to this area.

We were at the Pousada for three nights and it was one of the highlights of our trip to Portugal. Sitting next to the Roman Ruins, the Pousada has been beautifully restored. The location is perfect and within walking distance to all the sights in Evora.

I'm not sure what the complaints about the small room are all about. Our room, while modestly decorated, was spacious and comfortable. Our shutter type windows opened to a roof top view of the cathedral. We entered our room into a small foyer that led to an old fashioned type bathroorm with a clawfoot type of tub. If you have any issues with climbing over a tub, this might be a problem as there was no separate stand up shower stall. The room was quiet and we had no problems with the temperature control.

I would like to thank the gracious staff of the Pousada. During the trip, one of our traveling companions took a spill. Mr. Amante provided our companion with first aid bandages and later came up to the room with ice to apply on the injury.

On our last day, our check out was very early and the dining room would be not be open for breakfast at that time. We asked kitchen staff if they could perhaps have some hot coffee for us at check out. Imagine our surprise at check out when we were told that we had breakfast waiting for us in the bar area. A small table had been set up for us with china and cloth napkins along with hot coffee, juice, fruit, hard boiled eggs, pastries and bread. The breakfast table was beautifully and elegantly set, and my only regret is that I did not take a picture of it. Thank you to the staff of the Pousada for making our stay such a memorable one.

Room Tip: Maybe there are small rooms at the Pousada. Perhaps when checking in, a request can be made for a l...

We are 2 American couples who enjoyed staying in the heart of the city at the Pousada Dos Lois de Evora. The pousada had a lot of character, with large rooms where many guests chose to hang out and visit or check email. We read about the small guest rooms, called "cells" and formally used by the monks, so we booked two suites on the ground floor, using our senior discount. We had plenty of room and the location was private and quiet. The front office staff was friendly and accommodating, helping us with reservations and directions. Breakfast was plentiful and served in the courtyard. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a suite on the ground floor for more room, a larger bathroom, and a quiet location.

You can't beat the location (but bring a GPS if you're driving) and the nearby scenery. The restoration of the building was very well done and the public rooms give you a warm feeling. But be prepared for small sleeping rooms and small bathrooms. Also the rooms are "tired" and need some serious updating. If you like an American style shower, forget it. The bathtub has an overhead ring and the shower curtain gets closed in a small circle around you. Also, be aware that there is no in-room wi-fi available. The front desk workers were terrific and very friendly. But there simply weren't enough of them to handle all the people and their needs so some people had to wait. The service at the restaurant was similar - great attitude by the staff but not enough of them so we had to wait a long time. We sat down at 8:30 and the first course arrived at 9:10. The quality of the meal was ok but nothing special. At a lower price, all this might have been understandable and acceptable but at the high prices they charge, they should be able to do better.
