“Our First Pousada But Not Our Last”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2012

By turning old buildings (like this former convent) into the best of boutique hotels the government really knows what they are doing. This was beautiful with an ancient Roman Temple of Diana just outside the main entrance. The atmosphere was serene with a grand staircase from the lobby up to the rooms setting the tone for the whole visit. The town itself is ancient, historical and quaint with a Gothic Church (Cathedral Evora) completed in the 13th/14th century; the S. Franciscan Church with the Capela Dos Ossos (Chapel of Bones) and a huge main square build by King Duarte with several restaurants for people watching. Wander and see the whimsical side of the town with supended umbrellas in the streets. Lovely shops for the shopper - cork products everywhere!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back as there are cobblestone streets on the front side of the hotel and tires...

The hotel is just in the very centre of Evora with a beautiful foyer. But all good ends here. Our suite did not have a real window, the bathroom was obsolete and breakfast terrible. Showering in our bathroom, fairly obsolete, may flood the room if one were not very careful. Overall service was very poor.

Our party of six stayed at the Pousada in Evora for New Years Eve and an additional night. We have used Pousadas before so knew they were a little eccentric. The welcome and car parking were great. The bellboy could not have been more helpful. We had standard (basic) rooms which were on the second floor which is reached by a narrow winding staircase. The rooms were not a bad size but I agree with all that has been said before about the bathrooms. They are not the best. The stand alone bath is a little high sided and the shower is handheld with a clingy shower curtain. I looked in vain for somewhere to hook the showerhead. The only full length mirror in the room, 202, is situated at the end of the bath, so although you could watch yourself washing was of no other use. There were no mirrors at all in the bedroom, so pretty difficult to do hairstyle or makeup as the lighting was not brilliant in the bathroom.

The dinner on New Years Eve was okay, but not particularly hot and the service although friendly was poor involving long waits for courses and wine top ups. The entertainment was a disco which was fine and there were before dinner canapes and drinks. At midnight there was soup etc. The cost for the whole evening was Euros.94 a person which was probably fair enough.

Breakfast was the usual Pousada fare but served in an alcove so dark it was hard to see what was on offer.

We tried eating out the next day, January 1st, and found it difficult as most places were closed. Found a restaurant recommended in the DK Guides, Gemeo but it was disappointing.

Evora itself is a lovely town and worth a visit but as a side trip try Viano do Alentejo which is about half an hour away and has a great castle and churches.

Room Tip: Do not have Room 202.

The location of Pousada dos Loios couldn't be better and staff couldn't be more accomodating. The pousada is within easy walking distance of just about anything you'd like to see if Evora. And, the Roman Ruin, Temple of Diana, is just outside the door. Evora is a pretty town and a fun place to explore. The pousada is a very interesting pretty old building. The rooms were adequate and larger than I had expected since most of the tour books mentioned the small size of the cells (previously used by monks). The bathoom, however, was not to my liking. It had a large older tub that a person almost literally needed a ladder in order to climb into. The shower curtain was a surround type thing that was in the way as I showered. Plus, I couldn't get the shower head to stay up. Some of the water from the shower would run over the edge of the bathtub onto the bathroom floor due to the way the shower was constructed. There was a drain in the bathroom floor to accomodate this. One of the first things I noticed when I used the bathroom was that the floor was wet. After I took my first shower, I understood why. The rooms were not particularly quiet so I used earplugs to sleep. Breakfast at the pousada was fine, but not outstanding. The area our group used for dining was like a long hallway. This was very noisey. We ate an evening meal at the pousada which I did not care for. To sum it up, the historic lodging was fun and the location was convenient. But, from a practical standpoint, I've stayed in far more comfortable rooms.

Rooms are decent but staying here is all about the atmosphere. It's in a renovated old convent within the old city walls located right across from the Templo Romano. The public spaces are beautiful and breakfast is served around the courtyard area. Don't expect 4 star luxury but if you want to stay in a comfortable 18th century convent, this is the place for you!

Our whole trip through Portugal was amazing, but this hotel was a highlight of our trip! The location just can't be beat! The staff was amazing, the rooms were amazing! I would skip the restaurant and head out anywhere else for a better dinner! Go to the market and pack a picnic lunch and stop by the wine shop for some amazing local wine and enjoy it all with the locals in the parks! Evora in itself is one of the most beautiful places we've visited! Definitely book your room here!

Room Tip: Rooms are small since this used to be a monastery which is part of the charm. Each room has their ow...

This is a lovely old building , staff are pleasant and helpful . Public areas impressive as is the dining room around an internal glazed cloister . Food was good and reasonable value with good service . Signage poor and if arriving by car lack of a GPS would create problems . Covenient for visiting main sites in Evora . Our stay was spoilt by our room which was very small, fittings of a fairly poor standard and in need of renovation ( paint peeling for example ) , the bedrooms are the old monks cells and vary in size , ours was adjacent to the dining area and noisy .

Room Tip: Avoid rooms on the ground floor
