“Truly delightful and excellent value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 6, 2014

This former military hospital dating back to the Peninsular Wars and earlier is perched on the citadel wall commanding amazing views. The hotel is a lovely old building providing large bedrooms and spacious marble bathrooms. A good breakfast is served including scrambled egg bacon sausage as well as cold meats and cheese. The hotel is ideally situated for exploring the old town of Elvas. The staff are polite and helpful. There is a large free car park under camera surveillance. There is an attractive courtyard where in warmer months one may sit with shade if desired.

This hotel has a great location just inside the old city wall in this very beautiful, old town. The rooms are very spacious and beautiful and the hotel garden/patio is very beautiful too. We stayed here for three nights in October, and the first night it was a storm and very heavy rain. In the morning it started dripping from the roof in our bedroom, and when we told the man in the reception, we got a new room at once. Good service! The breakfast was very good and in beautiful locations. We will definitly stay here again if we are in Elvas.

We recently enjoyed a lovely one night stay at this hotel. The pool, courtyard and gardens are lovely, but the room and en suite was truly lovely. Very large. The staff were very welcoming indeed and we appreciated the free parking. The location is good. Breakfast was fine. The little issues that needed attention (shower cap missing, no instructions for safe, kettle empty at breakfast etc) were attended to promptly and politely. The only little negative was that when we arrived in our room we had a lovely surprise - a bottle of bubbly, fruit and chocolates. Turns out that they were a gift from a family member, but the hotel didn't inform us who they were from/that they were a gift (and not as part of the room). All in all, very good though.

This hotel has loads of character being a former monastery of a Medical Order. The conversion is very tastefully done, which means only the minimum changes for guest creature comforts were made. There is a very calm and peaceful aura about the place. Huge thick stone walls, many vaulted ceilings, tile floors. Compared with purpose-designed hotels, the corridors and common areas are LARGE - giving an overall sense of luxury. Most rooms have pleasant though not sweeping views. Our room was large. The air conditioning worked very well when needed and is genuinely central hence quiet. The furnishings are very appropriate for a former monastery – solid, fine for us, some might find comfort a bit lacking. Our bathroom was enormous. I rated the mattress a B+. Better-than-average towels and fine bed linen. Toiletries were limited but adequate. We didn’t test or even inquire about the wifi simply because we did not need to use it that night, but it might be available only in common area if that is vital to you.

The setting is truly spectacular, and while the place would be good on its own merit, it is the setting that unquestionably raises the hotel to a 5 rating.. The hotel basically occupies an entire outjut of the Vauban fortress. Our room was on the European first floor; at the end of the corridor we could walk straight out to multiple-angle views of the fortifications, and sweeping views of the surrounding countryside. The same area includes a beautiful swimming pool, completely tiled both side and bottom, and with two of the numerous examples of beautiful, tasteful Portuguese-style blue-and-white decorative tile “pictures” found throughout the building. To dry off, go and stand in one of the lookout vantages! The whole area is very nicely landscaped. There are numerous areas for guests to sit, and bring their own beverages etc if so inclined.

Staff were all very friendly, accommodating, and eager to please. There was always at least, one staff member on hand with excellent English. Breakfast was included and was perfectly OK, though not the best we had. Last but not least, easy to find. Also, plenty of private on-site open-air (i.e. not tortuous underground parking) parking. Trust us - this is not the case in most of these fortified towns.

We had hoped to eat in the hotel restaurant. Not to be – it is closed, of all times, Saturday night – the night we were there. Oh well. The hotel is within EASY walking distance of all the best town restaurants and we had an outstanding meal “on the economy” within two short blocks of the hotel.

This is one place we stayed (though not the only one) that we would ahve happily stayed longer.

Room Tip: They're all good. We asked when booking, for a quiet room - now we know they are pretty much qui...

On a recent trip through Spain and Portugal we spend one night in Elvas at this hotel. I was surprised that our GPS did not list this hotel in their data base and the address provided did not produce a result GPS result either. We had to rely on the old fashion method of stopping folks and asking for directions. Fortunately we received help and finally found the hotel. Without the hotel parking lot this would be a tough place in which to stay. However with the parking it really is a convenient way to visit this medieval walled city. Our room was a bit on the small side, but did provide us with a nice view of the country side. And we were able to smell the orange blossoms in the courtyard below. Our sleep was comfortable and the breakfast the next morning was good. We appreciated the friendly staff at the hotel and enjoyed being able to step out of our door and walk the narrow streets of Elvas. We found a nearby restaurant for a very enjoyable dinner. They just need to make it a bit easier to find.

We found the guys on reception , especially Louis, very helpful. We had to change our travel plans and the hotel were very accomodating even offering a room with balcony. Unfortunately, we were only able to stay one night in this atmospheric hotel which was originally a military hospital. It therefore has some rooms which are internal -in that they have no natural light.
It was great just to wander around the hotel and gardens. The hotel is similar to Paradors in Spain and Pousadas in Portugal but about half the cost. The hotel restaurant was closed but there are plenty of reasonably priced restaurants in Elvas and within walking distance.
The room rate included breakfast which could have been better -it was very busy and nobody seemed to be in charge- breakfast is taken in a warren of delightful rooms. The charm of the building outweighed any shortcomings. There was a small indoor smoking area. The room was well appointed - a small problem with the door fixed within minutes. The large car park was almost full when we arrived -it's not supervised so the 'hotel guests only' were probably ignored. Elvas itself is well worth a visit.

We have just spent a couple of weeks travelling around central Portugal and this was the only hotel where we were not offered help with luggage, or indeed, shown to our room. Pity, because there were two guys on reception and we were the only guests in reception at the time.
Lovely Bedroom and adequate breakfast. Well positioned for seeing the town of Elvas
