I have to thank a previous reviewer ("Black pigs will fly...") for pointing us here!! This restaurant was, indeed, SUPER!!!!! It is amazing, in these days of the proliferation of hideously expensive "chic" foodie restaurants, how much dining pleasure can be gained from a simple down-to-earth combination of wonderful quality ingredients, excellently cooked and decently served in an atmosphere where everyone else is similarly enjoying their meals!
As recommended in the preveius review, I, too, ordered that "25 Abril" steak (it MUST have been fillet, was 2" thick and at least 4"across, was pink in the middle and tender enough almost to cut with a fork!). That such a plain, simple salad of mere onion, tomatoes and lettuce with really tasty vinaigrette which accompanied the steak (salad or potatoes are included in the price!) could be so very DELICIOUS, I still find inexplicable, but it was WONDERFUL!! "House wine", at 4 euros per jug, was as good as, if not better than!!!, many far more pricier Alentejo wines found in bottles with up-marketed labels!! Desserts--the owner's mothers "sericaila" (or a word similar to that) , a custard-y, cinnemon-topped pie-ish confection served with an "ameixa da Elvas" (preserved greengage plum in syrup), and made by "grandma"--for instance, are really good, too!! (I think their priceless jewel of a Grandma is also their steak chef!! Grandma deserves a medal!!!!)
All in all, two of the BEST fillet steaks I have EVER eaten, homemade crisped potatoes , salad, a jug of wine , two fantastic desserts and coffee eaten in pleasant "typical" (unpretentious, un-fussy, un-"design". un-"concept") surroundings totaled an unimaginably low 40 euros!!!
Needless to say, the place was packed! All of Beja seems to come here to eat!!
Oh, and it is NOT difficult to find: Go the the top of the Praca da Republica and stand by the Pellorinho (pillory). Then walk straight ahead (towards) the large church and Rua da Moeda will be the first street on your left. The restaurant is 1/2way along Rua da Moeda.
