“Plain and a little dreary...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

We'd always heard great things about this place, but had never managed to give it a try. Today we found ourselves nearby, so called in for lunch... Maybe our expectations were too high? What we found was all a little drab & dreary. The food was OK, but nothing very special (apart from the chips, which were great). If you're a vegetarian, be warned, the menu had no vegetarian option apart from 1 dish on the specials board. Thankfully we're OK with fish, of which there were a few choices. The desserts I can't comment on, as nobody even asked us if we wanted one!!! We got bored of waiting and decided to pay and leave... Not massively impressed.

“Fabulous food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

Booked a table for four to have Sunday lunch after reading the reviews. Also looked at the pubs own website that states, "Treat yourself to one of our Chef 's proper Sunday Roasts with all the trimmings... All produce is of the highest quality and locally Sourced." This is priced at £7.95. However we were told the roast was not being served today, so we ordered from the menu. The food was excellent, piping hot, large quantities and very good value for money. Very friendly and helpful young man behind the bar.

When my wife booked she was informed that we would be given a table next to the fire but we were shown to a table furthest away from the fire. It was a very cold day and we expected the pub to be warmer. The open fire was at the far end of the long bar area. There did not appear to be any heating other than a radiator halfway down the room. We all kept our coats on because it was so chilly.

There is a restaurant type dining area but for some reason was not being used despite more than enough customers dining at the tables in the bar. While finishing our meal, a couple came in, sat down and asked what was on the Sunday roast menu. We were very surprised that the answer was Chicken, Pork or Beef.

A very confusing public house that needs better heating and organisation but cannot fault the food or service.

“Fabulous birthday meal for my mum!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2013 via mobile

Had a lovely meal last night for my mums birthday. We didn't book as we were late arriving in Derbyshire and came here on the recommendation of our cottage landlord. We just turned up and they accommodated 7 of us. There was a smaller light bite menu: a starter and main for £6.50. Specials were on at around £7.95. Main meals were reasonable too. A lovely homely welcoming pub. The staff couldn't have been more attentive, giving us loads of info for the local area and making such a fuss of us, even though we were a handful with all our various requests. The food was beautifully tasty. I would definately come here again.

“good pub”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

friendly, clean, good food, attentive staff. Menu feature local ingredients. Pleasant. Parking in back is best as the pub sits right on the street. What a pub should be.
