“A dream come true”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 1, 2013

After hearing about Bluefields nearly 20 years ago, and thinking about it for the intervening years. I had the site on my favorite list and would go to it when I needed an escape. I finally got to go this February. Having thought about it for so long, I was worried that it couldn't possibly live up to my expectations. But I have to say, without reservation, that Bluefields Bay Villas far exceeded what I had even allowed myself to dream. The people, the villas, the food,The entire experience was one I hope to repeat many times in the future. Thank you all for helping to make a dream come true.

Room Tip: The Hermitage is wonderful for two couples as there are two beautiful master suites.

We enjoyed Providence House immensely. It was absolutely the best choice for our family. We loved the layout of the house, all of the water front and oh the views! It water front was rocky, but we knew that could very well be the case so we just brought water shoes and it was fine. It was so private and relaxing! I can't say enough about the staff. We were so warmly greeted when we first arrived at the helipad by Carmen, Alfred and Aldeen. When we got to the house, we also met Harry and Sara. Aldeen, Sara and Harry are a magical combination of care, comfort and friendliness. Each one of them made sure we were so well taken care of and had everything we needed. I was a little nervous about having staff around all the time, but they were so truly wonderful, we never felt uncomfortable; just the opposite. They were so wonderful and so quickly became our friends! We also greatly appreciated how much thought and care went into accommodating my daughter and my dietary needs of vegetarian/vegan, along with our carnivore counterparts! I could eat coconut curry anything anytime and the coconut rundown salt fish was amazing! We also received a daily visit from Carmen or Alfred to make sure we were happy, go over meals or just to say hello. A welcome visit each and every time! Christopher took us on a wonderful morning hike and Maurice was an excellent driver and tour guide!

This was by far the best vacation we have ever had. My girls (ages 14 and 11) didn't miss any of the hoopla from a big resort. We had plenty to do, or not, as we saw fit! We did go to YS Falls and that was time well spent. We did the zip lining tour while there and that was also a great time. We also went to swim with the dolphins at one of the newer locations outside of Negril. While we did have an enjoyable time actually swimming with the dolphins, there really wasn't much else to do there (touch a sting ray, or pay extra to ride a camel or touch a shark). Plus they say they have a snack shop, but all they sell is chips and soda. Hopefully they will expand to provide other services. It is quite expensive and it would be nice to at least be able to spend an hour or two there after the drive. I think our favorite excursion though was to the Basic School. We took gifts for the children and were so loving welcomed with hugs and smiles. Our girls loved taking pictures with the kids, playing games and reading stories. The teachers were so kind to show us the classrooms, tell us about how their day works and just let us spend some time with all of them. What a treasure!

Oh, how we long to come back! We know we will be back, we just don't know when.

We planned a trip to Bluefields Bay Villas for several years with another couple who are dear friends. Finally, our week arrived in February, 2013. We could not have possibly planned or dreamed ahead of time what we were about to encounter.

First, the setting. We stayed at the Hermitage where everything was so beautiful and perfect it has redefined my ideas on decorating my home. Loved the easy elegance and antiques, something you don't usually associate with a home at the beach. The home and patio are perched looking right down onto the water and we spent every evening enjoying drinks and appetizers watching the sun melt into the ocean. After dinner, we retired out to the same spot, and studied thousands of stars and counted the shooting stars into the double digits.

The food was superb, We tried many interesting, delicious new fruits, and local Jamaican cuisine. We enjoyed the selection process for each meal, the day before, trying to decide how to taste all that Bluefields offered. And there was a lot.

Our excursions were delightful: YS Falls, Black River crocodile cruise, horseback riding on the beach, the orchid farm, hiking in the hills with Christopher, our guide, in-room massages and of course the delightful jerk chicken lunch on Wednesday.

But truly a highlight of our trip was meeting the people who cared for us and served us like kings and queens. We fell in love with Marvin, Sharon, Rose, Carmen, Percy, Christopher and more. What gracious and kind people who cheerfully ensured our every need was met. Often times, they thought of things before we even realized we had a need. They truly were the foundation for a week in paradise that will never be forgotten. Thank you for providing such a beautiful and relaxing spot in the world. We will be back!

My husband and I stayed at Bluefields Bay Villas in the Milestone Cottage for our honeymoon in August 2012. It was absolutely wonderful, and it was a perfect choice for an unforgettable one-of- a- kind honeymoon. If you are looking for an experience like none other- look no further. BBV offers the opportunity to live in your own seaside cottage and experience Jamaica at your own pace. Privacy, exceptional service, and excellent food all add to the unique experience. Now, for my very lengthy review:

ARRIVAL: Our stay was booked for one week, and we decided at the last minute to add an additional three nights at a nearby all inclusive to lengthen our honeymoon. While we thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at the large resort, and it helped get us in vacation mode, the upgrade in atmosphere and service were quite significant when we moved to BBV. Upon arrival, we knew we had made a great choice for our honeymoon. Neville picked us up from our previous accommodation, and drove us to Milestone cottage. On the way to Milestone, we made a quick stop and toured San Michele- what a beautiful villa with an awesome private island pavilion. Neville also pointed out the locations of the other villas, as well as the Peter Tosh memorial. When we got to Milestone, Carmen and the rest of the Milestone staff were there to welcome us with open arms (and refreshing coconuts to drink!). Carmen (who is exceptionally friendly and warm) gave us a tour of the property, and explained everything we would need to know about the cottage. We met with her the next day to discuss food preferences, and excursion/spa details. Carmen visited us periodically throughout our stay to ensure we were enjoying our trip. Within thirty minutes of arrival, we were lounging by the pool with Red Stripes and a gorgeous sunset in our backyard.

ACCOMMODATIONS: We chose the Milestone cottage for the amount of privacy it offers, as well as the seaside pavilion by the water. This is an excellent villa for a honeymoon, or any other romantic getaway. The villa is small, but well appointed, and perfect for two. The master bedroom features a romantic four poster bed with netting and has access to both of the villa's bathrooms-one with a shower, and one with a bathtub. There is an open air living area with a couch that overlooks the dining area where most of our meals were served. The dining area is adjacent to the pool, which is perched dramatically on the high cliff, allowing you to take in the breathtaking sea views all day long. A set of steep stairs leads you down to the wonderful seaside pavilion, which comes complete with a hammock, chairs/table, and sun loungers. We spent many days lounging in the seaside pavilion, and swimming in the sea in complete privacy. There is a large float tethered in the ocean that we loved swimming to, and sunbathing on! The villa provides snorkel equipment , which we utilized and saw starfish, stingrays, and other wildlife quite frequently! The villa also comes with it's own kayaks, that can be used whenever you would like (the staff will help you launch them). The villa does not have a sandy beach, but it does offer sea access via a stone path right into the water. The sandy beach is a 5 minute kayak ride away, which we loved doing daily. Bluefields Beach is beautiful, and the great service continues when you are at the beach. The beach itself has ample lounge chairs (which were frequently adorned with fresh flowers and towel art!), and there is always someone there to offer you a beverage or whatever else you might need! Overall, we felt the Milestone cottage was a wonderful choice for a honeymoon due to it's secluded nature, and after viewing a few of the other villas, we would most likely chose to return to Milestone if just the two of us were travelling. We would also consider Cottonwood for it's close proximity to the beach, but it does lack the extreme seclusion Milestone has due to it being adjacent to the Hermitage.

DINING: The food at Bluefields is heavenly. Each day, we were treated to three homemade meals that were tailored to our liking. The staff will work with you each day concerning meal times, so that it works into your schedule for the day. Bluefields uses local ingredients, as well as locally sourced jams, coffee, etc. Each meal is presented with beautiful china and crystal, as each villa has an exceptional collection. Food was always fresh tasting, and delicious. I highly recommend letting the staff know about any extreme dislikes, or allergies, and then letting them surprise you with meal selections- you will not be disappointed. We loved being surprised by at each meal, and removing menus/decision making enhanced our experience greatly as we looked forward to each dining experience, and what it might have in store for us! Each morning we rose to a perfectly brewed pot of coffee, and were treated to a delicious full breakfast prepared by Thermagene. Don't miss the Jamaican breakfast items such as the callaloo omelet, festival, and ackee and salt fish! Lunch was served either our dining area, or the seaside pavilion, and was always tasty. Dinners were always a highlight of our day, as they were always served by candlelight, and with fresh flowers on the table. The nightly soup course is wonderful, and entree stand outs for us included the ginger lobster, and the curried lamb. Additionally, the banana bread is awesome! In terms of beverages, our headman Neville was always around to offer up a cold drink at just the right moment. Throughout our stay we enjoyed Red Stripes, several varieties of wine, and many tasty frozen tropical drinks.

ACTIVITIES: Most of our days were spent lounging around, and enjoying our time with each other. Each day included activities such as : swimming in the warm sea, snorkeling, kayaking, lounging in our private pool, reading/napping in the seaside pavilion hammock. You can be as active as you like, but we chose to primarily relax on our trip. We enjoyed attending the weekly cocktail hour and jerk lunch in the Treehouse, as this gave us an opportunity to chat with a few other guests as well as both Houston and Debbie. We decided to do one excursion day during our stay, which we were able to arrange easily after our arrival. We decided to go to YS Falls, as well as the Pelican bar. YS falls was beautiful, and Maurice hooked us up with Ninja, a guide who led us through the falls and took amazing pictures for us. Bluefields sent us with a full lunch (delicious fried chicken) and a cooler full of Red Stripes and bottled water, and we felt like VIP's all day. After the falls, we headed over to the Pelican Bar. After a brief negotiation for a boat ride to the bar, we were on our way! The Pelican Bar was an amazing experience, and we are really glad we decided to check it out. We loved hanging out on the driftwood bar on stilts a mile offshore, listening to locals play a heated game of dominoes, and sipping on cold Red Stripes. We felt the excursion rates from Bluefields were very reasonable, and would recommend that anyone planning to do multiple days of excursions take advantage of the car rental they offer (they will provide a driver). We also decided to partake in a couple's massage in our villa-I highly recommend this, as it was absolutely wonderful. Our massage took place during a crashing thunderstorm in the comfort of our room-request Nicholas, he was amazing.

SERVICE: The service at Bluefields is impeccable. The entire staff is attentive, friendly, and professional. We were unsure how we would feel about having a dedicated staff, as this was a first for us, but the staff immediately made us feel comfortable. They are great at sensing how much attention you need, and manage to magically appear whenever needed, and the rest of the time give you the privacy and space you need. Our "house" was always spotless thanks to Thermagene, who also provided turn down service each night for us, including special lighting, mosquito netting, incense, and AC in the bedroom. The included laundry service is a huge perk, and allows you to pack lightly! Our bellies were always full thanks to Anna-Kay as well as a few other chefs! Neville always made sure we had plenty of cold drinks, and provided flawless lunch/dinner service. The night watchmen made us feel safe and secure, as well as making us great coffee in the AM. Percy drove us back to the airport for our return home, and was an absolute joy to talk to, and we loved that he pointed out so many interesting facts about Jamaica to us! The booking process was painless, and Debbie was so nice to work with (especially since we planned our honeymoon at the last minute). We'd like to give a big thank you to all the staff at Bluefields for helping us have the best honeymoon possible.

Overall, we would highly recommend Bluefields Bay Villas to anyone seeking a unique, upscale, and authentic Jamaican experience. No crowds, no buffets, no cruise ship style activities here- simply bliss with your travelling companions. While it is a bit on the pricey side compared to the our average vacation, we would like to note that in spite of this, we felt the value of the trip was exceptional. As soon as we can swing it, we plan to come back. Hopefully sooner than later- it is truly a special place!

We are from Europe and visited Bluefields Bay in January 2013.
We were in "The Hermitage" villa.
This was a wonderful vacation!
It was our first trip to Jamaica and our stay at Bluefields Bay has contributed to this impression in a unique and special way!
We liked the friendliness and professionality of the whole team: butler, cook, house keeper, beach guys etc.
There was nothing to complain about actually and all of them did their best to make our vacation perfect and unforgettable!
Our butler has even arranged special last dinner for us near the beach.
We stil miss the Bloody Mary's he made for us!;)
We definitely recommend Bluefields Bay Villas to all our friends and all people who plan to visit Jamaica.
We want to say to the whole team: thank for you your warm reception and excellent service!
Absolutely, if we will come next time to Jamaica then our destination will be one of Bluefields Bay villas!

I was lucky enough to visit Bluefields Bay Villas (twice) as a teenager with my aunt and uncle. San Michele was an absolute paradise that I'd only dreamed about returning to. This September, my husband and I celebrated our 10th Anniversary and we chose to return to Bluefields and stay at Cottonwood Cottage. The moment we arrived, I was questioning why I had waited so long to visit. This gorgeous landscape with its beautifully designed cottages seemed more breathtaking than I'd remembered. The true test, was gauging how my "fastforward-minded" emergency physician husband would like it. Turns out, it was the best vacation of our marriage. He relaxed and soaked in more personal "peace" than I could've ever hoped for.
We have traveled extensively throughout the years, and have stayed all over the Caribbean at several 5 star all-inclusive resorts and the staff at Bluefields is by FAR the best we've ever had the pleasure of meeting. They are the kindest, most accommodating staff.
We enjoyed our trip so much in September, that we returned again in January with our children. After seeing our pictures and hearing our stories from the September trip, our kids didn't want to go anywhere but Jamaica. We even (half-heartedly) offered DISNEY! And what a remarkable experience the second trip turned into. The staff were so loving towards our kids. We used this opportunity to teach our children how to be gracious and polite, using the "staff" as our best example. This was really the first trip that our kids were mature enough to experience and appreciate another culture....so we were thrilled that the Bluefields family was there to share with us. Bluefields even arranged a trip to a local Basic School so our children could meet and visit with Jamaican children their age. Our kids delivered school supplies and were greeted with such graciousness and warmth.
Nothing is too much trouble for the Bluefields staff and the Moncure family. We have raved so much about our two recent trips, THAT we've arranged to take a 3rd trip with our "medschool" friends this July! We are celebrating life and the END to a personally challenging year for one of our travel companions. And, we could've gone ANYWHERE in the world, but we chose to return, yet again to Bluefields Bay Villas. 3's a charm anyway, right? Is July here yet?

Room Tip: We were able to tour every single villa and they are ALL gorgeous. Someday, I hope we can say that...

I just returned from a marvelous vacation at the Bluefields Bay Villas. It was a "ladies" vacation-11 of us at San Michele and it was like wrangling kittens! But the entire staff-Percy, Harry, Carmen, Suzanne, and the rest were attentive, cordial and accommodating. The delicious food was lovingly and expertly prepared with local, fresh ingredients with an eye to all of our individual tastes and sensibilities. The table was always set with gorgeous antique china and silverware collected by the Moncures and made each meal an experience. Not to mention the gorgeous views, lush sunsets and our island pavilion where we relaxed on a hammock, swam, snorkeled and kayaked. Some of us treated ourselves to an expert massage from Venesia.

The villas are intimate, charming and lovely without being stuffy or "Disney-ed". Much detail has been paid to the furnishings and artwork and it shows.

I could not agree with Brenda J. more. It was a memorable vacation and I hope that I have the pleasure of returning someday.

Room Tip: I believe that all of the rooms at San Michele have balconies or patios...you can't go wrong wit...
