“Stopover on the way to Bilbao”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

If you travel from Paris to Bilbao, as we did, you better stop for rest and to recharge your energy. There is no better place than the rural, small hotel ( six rooms only) in Uriz. The best room is in the tower with a panoramic view of the countryside. The hosts are friendly and provide guests with nice breakfast and dinners with several choices on the menu. Wine is included unless you wish something very special. If so, they will get it for you. Walks into the mountains are refreshing and views breathtaking. Do not miss the place!

Room Tip: The room on the top of the tower. Two flights up but worth climbing!

Setting and accommodation just wonderful. Very well renovated inside and out.
Family type restaurant with little but good choice. Wine selection was very good.
Bar and common room very comfortable and extremely well appointed.
Beds very hard so beware if you have back pain.
The only negative point, but unfortunately a significant one, is that the lady owner doesn't make you feel at ease, on the contrary. We felt we were nothing but squatters in her newly renovated house and when dared to mention the beds were hard, were sternly invited to reconsider our tastes and just move on! A pity.

The hotel has been decorated to a very high standard and the room we stayed in was very comfortable but there is one major flaw - the sound-proofing between floors is non-existent and we could hear everything in the room above us. Given that there is near total silence in the area surrounding it, this is a very basic error, so if you are looking for that perfect break, then be prepared.

The food was good and the breakfast was nice too. The hosts are helpful but I can´t help feeling that the whole place could do with a bit more warmth and soul, especially for the price they charge.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the top of the tower so there is no-one above you!

We stayed for one night in July as part of our honeymoon. What a stunning place! We loved our stay, just what we wanted, quiet and tranquil in a beautiful setting! The room was our favourite hotel room of our whole trip, the place has been refurbised amazingly well.

The couple that own it are extremely friendly but not overly and the food she cooks is gorgeous, we had a lovely dinner with them.

A memory i will take with me of this hotel is the gentle sound of the cattle bells and church chimes, beautiful country mountain sounds.

If you are travelling anywhere in Northern Spain, make the effort to seek out Hotel Rural Torre de Uriz, even if just for a night.
The tiny hotel, in a hamlet near the Irati forest in Navarra, and not far from Pamplona, is absolutely gorgeous. Every care has been taken - the furniture and decor is so stylish but rustic-looking, and there are even things like a self-service bar (well-stocked) downstairs and sound system with an ipod dock.
The room was even better - panoramic 360 degree views around the beautiful countryside, and a lovely big bed.
For us English speakers, Jesus and Paula were so welcoming (and both have great English). Jesus talked us through walks we could do in the nearby area, and a good place to stop off for lunch.
But what really made the stay was the food, cooked by Paula and served with a smile by Jesus. If you stay, do book in for dinner EVERY night. The choice is enormous, and everything was delicious and a bargain for the set menu. Try the steak in particular - just perfect.
The breakfast was the same, great value.
And to top it all off, they left us with a list of pintxos suggestions for San Sebastian, our next stop, which turned out to be great. We will definitely be back when we can - for longer next time.

Room Tip: Go for room 6 at the top of the tower (though bear in mind that the bathroom doesn't have a door...

The website reflects the visual aspects of the hotel perfectly. What you see is what you get!

The setting is peaceful and beautiful; the hotel: comfortable and tastefully decorated; the food: tasty and attractively presented; and the managers: helpful and tactful. Everything was perfect for our mini-getaway to the Pyrenees! It’s the perfect place to share with someone special. I have recommended this hotel to all of my friends!

Arrived here a little nervous as you never know what you are going to find, will it live up to the reviews etc. I booked room 6 which is at the top of the tower, which has a unique feel.

The investment of time, energy and love can be seen throughout the place. It is very simple yet very comfortable. Modern design in a traditional old building. A rustic setting with attention to detail.

Our room was very spacious, good firm beds with, the bathroom did not have door so sharing with friends might be an issue, other rooms have a separate bathroom.

Paula and Jesus are very helpful yet respect personal space.

Breakfast was simple, fresh juice, coffee, fruit, yogurt, pastries etc.
We had dinner the first night which was as simple as delicious and great value.

We would absolutely visit again, the location is perfect for walking, touring the local area or just chilling out.

Room Tip: Room 6 in the tower , Unique.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Welcome to Torre de Uriz Hotel, a small rural hotel located in the same village in Arce's Valley. According to Uriz description, dated 1785: it is one of the very ancient villages, celebrated for its nobility, so most of the houses have a coat of arms. No doubt this is right; Uriz is a beautiful town that holds in its urban fabric and in its architectural heritage of beautiful gothic and defence towers the charm of medieval villages. It is just in one of those towers, declared of Cultural Interest in 1949, where the Hotel Torre de Uriz is located. It has a privileged location just 14 miles away from the collegiate church of Roncesvalles, at the start of the Route of Santiago de Compostela (Way of Saint James) in the eastern Pyrenees of Navarre. The hotel location and its access, through a newly built road, make the hotel a perfect base to explore the spectacular Irati forest, to practice birdwatching in the gorges of Lumbier or Arbayun and even as an option to bear in mind after spending a long feast day in Pamplona during the San Fermin. ... more   less
