I have stayed at Varlet Farm on several occasions, and can heartily recommend it to anyone wishing to visit the Flanders battlefields of WW1. Built and run by Charlotte Cardoen-Descamps, a true enthusiast and perfectionist who makes your stay really memorable and welcoming. There are rooms including a lovely family suite in the farmhouse, and new rooms furnished to a superb modern standard in the recently converted outbuildings. In this building you will also find the large breakfast room - and what a breakfast. But perhaps it is the location - on the heart of the Pacchendaele battlefield - that will be of most interest. Varlet Farm was the name given by British troops to the ruins of the former farmhouse in 1914-1918. The area today is tranquil and great walking and cycling country. It hides its tragic secrets well, although as you stay longer you begin to notice more than the main cemeteries and memorials. Look out for concrete blockhouses, shrapnel pieces in the fields, the off unexploded artillery shell (which are taken away by the army when found). Ypres town, just a 10 minute drive, is full of historic interest and has all the restaurants and bars you might need for a really great stay.
