We stayed at Camalou for 3 nights in June 2009. Camalou is in a lovely, quiet setting just outside of Ypres. We could look out our window and see cows grazing in the fields. Our room was nicely decorated and very clean. There is a fridge and tea/coffe making facilities for guests in the hallway outside of the rooms. There's also a computer with internet access for guests. Breakfast was delicious with fresh melon, yogurt, cereal, an assortment of croissants, breads, meats and cheese as well as a fresh egg which came fried or boiled.

Twice we had dinner in town and, we ate at Tommies the other night which is conveniently located just down the laneway from Camalou.

Annette and Christian were such fabulous hosts and so knowledgable about the WW1 battlefield sites. On our first day, we travelled to northern France on our own and Annette helped us with maps and planning out our route. The following day, we used Annette's services as a guide and travelled with her and another couple to visit the sites in Ypres and the surrounding area. It was such an incredible experience. Annette was able to provide us with so much information -- it would have been so different if we had done this on our own.

We would highly recommend Camalou to anyone wishing to stay in the Ypres area!

We have stayed at Camalou 6 or 7 times over the past 4 years. Christian and Annette, the owners, are so friendly, kind and efficient. The rooms are spacious, clean and well equipped, with really comfortable beds and with super en suite facilities. You can make a hot drink whenever you want to, and in the evening are usually presented with a free cold beer. They run battlefield tours, using 2 modern "people carriers" and they both have encyclopaedic knowledge about the conflicts in Flanders and on the Somme. Christian speaks fluent English, French, Dutch,German as well as Flemish, of course, and Annette is also fluent in English. There is a library for use by the guests with many books and leaflets about the Two World Wars and there is also free internet access. The breakfasts are filling, well prepared and with a wide choice and the breakfast room is large and bright. The house is situated in its own beautiful gardens only 4 km or so from Ypres centre but is in a very quiet neighbourhood, with fields on 3 sides. Ypres is an interesting town well worth a visit apart from its historical significance. There is a good pub that serves meals only 100 metres away.Camalou is better than many other places that charge far more. We will be back!

I stayed at Camelou with my two adult sons while visiting the graves of our forefathers from WW1 in the area. The help we received was phenomenal. Annette's knowledge is not just local. Her instructions on how to get to Waterloo were spot on.

The rooms are well appointed & comfortable,.the breakfast served is more than adequate. There is also a well stocked library available at Camelou.

Camelou is very well situated to vist the WW1 battlefields of Flanders.

If I visited the area again I would not even consider staying elsewhere.

On our third day after returning from Waterloo the local Restaurant had not yet opened
(It was only 1700 hrs) but Annette phoned to get them to open early. Excellent service

We stayed 5 nights at Camalou & took a tour of the battlefields with Annette as our guide. The tour was quite expensive but I would highly recommend their tours to anyone interested in the WW1 battles as both Annette & Christian have extensive knowledge & interest of the battlefield areas. They tailor make the tour depending on which country your interested in. Their van is professionally equipped with intercom & video so even if you are sitting at the back of the vehicle you can still hear the commentary.
The guesthouse is a little way out of town which makes it difficult for dining if you don't have a car. There is a pub at the end of the laneway which cooks an excellent steak. The sauces are a bit questionable but the steaks are very tender.
Nothing seems too much trouble for Annette & Christian. They were happy to pick up their guests from the railway station & return them there at the end of the stay and they were happy to drive us into town for dinner & return to collect us at the end of our dinner.
The bedrooms are charming & Annette was very flexible to our needs as we had originally booked for 3 nights with 2 people staying but were unexpectedly joined by our son on our travels & without much prior notice for Annette she accomodated our son & took us for a further 2 nights. There are also tea/coffee making facilities.
Breakfast is a treat. We always started with fresh fruit followed by bacon & eggs. Cereal, toast, yoghurt ,bread & cold meats were also offered. The eggs were collected by Christian on his push bike from a neighbour in the morning-we spotted him one morning with his Akubra hat firmly on his head riding off. When we questioned him later that morning at breakfast he told us where he had been & what he was doing.
We found Annette & Christian to be wonderful hosts & we would highly recommend their battlefield tours.

When we arrived we were told that due to some renovations we would be staying at another B&B. The other place was fine, and had a rather good breakfast but was perhaps not as historic/charming as I was expecting at Camalou. The main reason we stayed there though was for the tour, and Annette provided a fantastic tour, tailoring it to us as Canadians, but capturing the highlights as well.

We were only there for the one night, with the tours spread out over a day and a half. We were quite happy with the fact that they ferried us around from the train station, to town for dinner, and took us out of town to see some things beyond the normal tour stuff. If I were looking to go back to Ypres I might look for a cheaper alternative, but if you are going for the first time I would recommend Camalou and the tours, especially if you are not planning to have a car while there.

  • Liked — Knowledgable tour guide, service
