My husband and I stayed with Annette and Christian in their beautiful B&B during the warm month June of 2006.
My husbands late Grandfather had lost his life in the Great War and we decided to do some research into the history of Ypres where he was based during some of WW1.
Annette is an absolute fountain of knowledge and is keen to help anyone out with tracking down where the battles took place, which may have involved your family members regiment. She told us the exact battle and place where my husbands late Grandfather lost his life just by researching our info on her computer. We had a lovely whole day Battlefield Tour with Annette and a few other guests, the day before we drove back to England and it truly was an amazing experience. We finished up at the Tyn Cott Cemetary where Grandfather's name appears on one of the plaques, as the sun was setting. Her Mercedes people carrier was very comfy and spacious.
The spiral staircase does prove to be a bit of a challenge if you have any disability, and is tricky to get suitcases around so my suggestion would be to travel light with canvas holdalls.
Everything is provided for guests to be home from home, as there are tea and coffee facilities on the landing, a fridge to keep your wine, chocolates etc in and free internet use on the landing.
The bedrooms are lovely with views accross the fields, the only complaint from my husband was that the bed was a little soft for him.
Breakfast was a wonderful selection of yoghurt, cereals, fruit, many kinds of bread which we could toast, if preferred. The free range eggs which were served boiled or fried, were delicious. Plenty of conversation around the table started the day as the guests all share the same dining table. Whilst we were there we shared the table with a superb Canadian family, an Australian lad and some Isralies. Evening meals can be taken at the marvellous restaurant just at the end of Annettes driveway, named Tommies. We had quite a few meals in there and were never dissappointed at the menu. (Check opening times though because they were shut Monday and Tuesday when we stayed.)
A couple of good restaurants in Ypres were Poppies, The Regina Hotel(quite expensive, but wonderful) and one or two right in the square underneath the conservatories which I can't remember the name of.
Sadly when we returned to Ypres in 2007 Annette and Christian's B&B was full, so we had to stay elsewhere. My tip would be to check out in advance and book well ahead as it really is a gem of a place.
