“Beautiful rural B&B with fantastic Hosts”

Camalou

My husband and I stayed with Annette and Christian in their beautiful B&B during the warm month June of 2006.
My husbands late Grandfather had lost his life in the Great War and we decided to do some research into the history of Ypres where he was based during some of WW1.
Annette is an absolute fountain of knowledge and is keen to help anyone out with tracking down where the battles took place, which may have involved your family members regiment. She told us the exact battle and place where my husbands late Grandfather lost his life just by researching our info on her computer. We had a lovely whole day Battlefield Tour with Annette and a few other guests, the day before we drove back to England and it truly was an amazing experience. We finished up at the Tyn Cott Cemetary where Grandfather's name appears on one of the plaques, as the sun was setting. Her Mercedes people carrier was very comfy and spacious.
The spiral staircase does prove to be a bit of a challenge if you have any disability, and is tricky to get suitcases around so my suggestion would be to travel light with canvas holdalls.
Everything is provided for guests to be home from home, as there are tea and coffee facilities on the landing, a fridge to keep your wine, chocolates etc in and free internet use on the landing.
The bedrooms are lovely with views accross the fields, the only complaint from my husband was that the bed was a little soft for him.
Breakfast was a wonderful selection of yoghurt, cereals, fruit, many kinds of bread which we could toast, if preferred. The free range eggs which were served boiled or fried, were delicious. Plenty of conversation around the table started the day as the guests all share the same dining table. Whilst we were there we shared the table with a superb Canadian family, an Australian lad and some Isralies. Evening meals can be taken at the marvellous restaurant just at the end of Annettes driveway, named Tommies. We had quite a few meals in there and were never dissappointed at the menu. (Check opening times though because they were shut Monday and Tuesday when we stayed.)
A couple of good restaurants in Ypres were Poppies, The Regina Hotel(quite expensive, but wonderful) and one or two right in the square underneath the conservatories which I can't remember the name of.
Sadly when we returned to Ypres in 2007 Annette and Christian's B&B was full, so we had to stay elsewhere. My tip would be to check out in advance and book well ahead as it really is a gem of a place.

We spent three nights at Camalou Guest House in October and used it as a base to explore the WWI battlefields and memorials in Belgium and northern France. Our hosts, Annette and Christian were fantastic. They provided advice on were to go and what to see. We drove around the area and thanks to their advice saw all of the places we wanted to see.

They also run their own tours and these were praised by the other guest who took them. Both Annette and Christian have extensive knowledge of the area and the history of the battlefields.

The rooms were spacious and well appointed. Very clean and comfortable. The atmosphere at the guesthouse was very friendly and there is easy internet access. The breakfasts were good. Over breakfast everyone planned their day based on the experiences of the other guests and Annette's valuable suggestions.

Camalou is a great base from which to tour the battlefields to and the experience was made much better by our friendly and very knowledgeable hosts. Highly recommended.

I spent 3 nights at Camalou and thoroughly enjoyed it. Annette is a fountain of knowledge regarding the Great war and never tired of answering questions and giving advice. Both she and Christian are marvelous hosts - the accommodations are very clean and comfortable, and breakfast is generous and tasty (esp. the home-made bread!).
Would recommend Camalou without hesitation.

For anyone planning a trip to the WWI battlefields & memorials, this is one place you should think of as a base. Annette & her husband know so much that can add that finishing touch to a memorable holiday. The rooms are delightful, the spiral staircase is a bit tricky with a large suitcase, but we managed, the breakfast is delicious, but what makes this place so much more are the hosts. I so wish I could have stayed longer! Annette found where a relative had died during WW1 for me, while I finished breakfast, this lady is truly amazing, as is her B & B.

“Really good B and B”

This is a really good Bed and Breakfast. Christian and Annette, who own and run it, are a really wonderful couple - nothing is too much trouble, the rooms are well equippped and spacious and the breakfast are great. They both speak several languages, including French, Flemish, English, German and Dutch. Annette also runs battlefield tours and she is exceptionally knowledgeable about the First World War. They do not do evening meals, but there isa bar only 100 metres away that does good cheap meals and Ypres is only 4 km away. We have stayed there three times and will return next year. They will pick people up from Lille or Ypres and drop them off in the town centre for evening meals etc. The location is rural and very quiet - just the lowing of the cows is the only noise to disturb your beauty sleep! There is free use of the internet. We cannot stress too much what a marvellous B and B this is, and very reasonably priced.
