The “B&B at Rooms Ieper” is in a class all of its own. This place is better than excellent. The quality of the bedroom and bathroom is of the highest standard. And the breakfast provided - cold continental- was second to none. There was a choice of cereal, breads, meats, cheeses, fresh berry fruit, yoghurt, dried fruits, tea and coffee that was the best we had experienced in our 6 weeks travelling around France and Belgium. Nancy also prepared perfect soft-boiled eggs on two mornings. The bed was extremely comfortable and the bathroom was large, modern and simply beautiful. Towels were plush. The town centre, Menin Gate and attractions and restaurants are all within easy walking distance with parking on the street outside the B&B. Added to this was the outstanding treatment we received, starting with the welcome drink on arrival and the friendly people who looked after us. In particular the assistance provided by Dirk who helped us locate the site, in a farmer’s paddock, where my wife’s great uncle had died during the battle of Polygon Woods some 97 years before. Dirk then spent the day with us taking us to various World War I sites and giving us a real tangible experience of how it was for the many thousands who died in this terrible tragedy. His sensitivity and knowledge of the events, battle sites, memorials and cemeteries were invaluable. For us it was an emotional day, being the first members of my wife’s family to come and see the sites and to find her great uncle’s name, with the other lost Australians, on the Menin Gate. If you are coming to Ieper, then you could not do better than stay with our new found friends, Nancy and Dirk, at ‘Rooms at Ieper’.
