“A must see!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

Quite simply put, if you are in Ypres you have to witness this ceremony! It occurs every night at 8pm, and has done so since 1928 (there was a gap during the Second World War however), and is a truly fitting memorial to over 54,000 Commonwealth soldiers from WW1 who have no known grave. Members of the local fire brigade sound the last post, and it is very moving. On the five nights we attended, it was filled with people-get there early if you wish to have a good view.

“Poignant, stirring ceremony”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 30, 2013

We were impressed that so many schools cover WWI in their curriculum. This was evidenced by the numbers of young people in school groups at the ceremony, laying wreaths and also throughout the Battlefields area whilst we were there.

“Moving and humbling”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

That the Belgian fire service officers perform this ceremony every evening of the year is testament to the gratitude of the Belgians to the British and Allied troops who fell during the first war.
