Having visited Ypres and Bruges on several occasions in the past 12 months we've always struggled to find good authentic Flemish food. Our B&B in Ypres recommended this restaurant and after visiting the Menin Gate at 20:00 for the incredibly moving Last Post ceremony we had a walk down to De Ruyffelaer. It was quiet when we arrived but lovely and warm with the real fires helping to create a cosy ambience. We decided that we'd go straight for the main course of rabbit served with mashed potato (I'd never tried rabbit before)
It was fantastic. The sauce was delicious and the rabbit was cooked to perfection.
The cost - for two stunning dinners and two glasses of red was about €42. Worth every single penny (I'm from Yorkshire so that's praise personified!)
If you're in Ypres and want excellent Flemish food, don't go to the restaurants around the square. Visit De Ruyffelaer. You won't be disappointed.
Hope this helps
