We were unbelievably lucky to have been accommodated by Caroline in the Clair de Lune suite over a recent weekend in September. I (foolhardily) waited until the last minute to secure reservations in Bruges and once I started looking, I realized that the Huyze Hertsberge was really the only place I wanted to stay: It has the best location in town, canal-side, with absolutely gorgeous accommodations and enclosed garden, not to mention the resident canine "movie star," Fidel, who made a cameo appearance in the Hollywood movie "In Bruges" simply by being his perfectly adorable self, sleeping, as he likes to do, in a bay window overhanging the canal. As such, he's a permanent fixture on the canal tours; all of the tour operators point him out, and he probably features prominently in many tourists' vacation photos!
Caroline was an absolutely charming hostess, the most perfect innkeeper we have had the pleasure of meeting in our many experiences with a variety of chambres d'hotes, B&Bs and inns around the world. She greeted us warmly, with a map and the most comprehensive historical/insider's secrets lecture on Bruges that we could have asked for. Within a half an hour we learned about the history of Bruges, the various parts of the city, local legends, infamous watering holes, the best restaurants, the most romantic scenic spots, and which activities we should not miss (boat tour, brewery tour) and those we should bypass (carriage ride). Our room was airy, spacious, and beautifully appointed and Caroline did everything she could to ensure we felt as though the house was our home for the duration of our stay. We had access to the entire downstairs, including a magnificent museum-like sitting room, gorgeous kitchen and dining room, and of course the outside terrace and garden.
Breakfast each day was a feast; there was a plethora of delicious baked goods, excellent and bottomless coffee served in your own silver teapot, fruit, cereals, and fresh squeezed juice. The whole atmosphere exuded calm and tranquility, furthered by the hosts' warm and inviting natures.
By the end of our stay I nearly felt as though Caroline was an aunt I was truly lucky to have in my family, with a beautiful home I had the good fortune to visit, and return again and again to. When we left, Caroline bid us a warm adieu, and as our taxi pulled up the road opposing the house, we looked across the canal to find Caroline and Fidel both leaning out of the window, waving (Caroline) and barking (Fidel) enthusiastically. I nearly teared up to have to leave!
As our cab driver said so succinctly, "It's the best place in town." I couldn't agree more.
