't Geerwijn is on a tranquil street, just a few steps from the center of Brugge (Bruges). We enjoyed the convenience of staying one block from a lively shopping area, and two blocks from the colorful Marketplace, where there is frequent bus service to the train station.
A numeric passcode opens the front door; each of the half dozen rooms in the house has its own key. A steep flight of stairs led up to our room in the attic, which was not as well decorated as the ones pictured in the website. In the little hallway that separated our private bathroom from our bedroom, there was a fridge and microwave. Although the double bed was roomy, it was jammed against the sloping ceiling, with a beam running right across the head.
The breakfast table (8:30 – 9:30) was stocked with yogurt, cheese, cold cuts, and sliced bread (including some delicious fruity/nutty ones). Toppings included honey, apple syrup (a local specialty), and homemade fruit preserves. Our hostess cooked our eggs to order.
Our stay in July was unfortunately marred by the presence of mosquitoes. I stayed up most of the first night and killed seven of them, plus two more on each of the subsequent nights. The white walls, silent street, and screened windows all helped in combatting them. Nevertheless, we suffered a few bites; the itch and lack of sleep made me quite grumpy and miserable during the entire vacation. I understand that mosquitoes are endemic in the area. Another couple staying there also spoke of mosquitoes in their room, but reported that they did not have a mosquito problem when they stayed at another place across town.
