“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

We recently visited Bruges and stayed at the 't Geerwijn Bed& Breakfast for three nights. It was a wonderful stay all around. Our room was beautiful and big. Chris was out of town for part of the stay, but her son Laurent took great care of us. The breakfast, too, was very good. And the house was beautiful! Best of all was the location, just a short walk to the center of town. Plus, because it was on a side street, it was quiet at night. There was free WiFi and also a very friendly resident cat. Perfect! We'll be staying there again on our next visit!!

we stayed there recently for one night and we chose it because of the rave reviews on tripadvisor. we were only going through bruges on our way driving to holland to catch a train to iltay. we love staying at bed and breakfasts and we are not the type who like fancy hotels. we like the idea of a home away from home and have always had brilliant experiences with bed and breakfasts both in the UK and elsewhere across Europe. this is certainly the opposite of the home away from home feeling. it all started going wrong when we had some car trouble. we were running late. not only did the bed and breakfast owner not inquire as to whether we were okay she was quite annoyed with us for being late. when we arrived with our really nice tow truck driver, i accidentally pressed the code to the door wrong and it rang the bell and she came out saying what's wrong, don't you know the code? although i appreciate it was late, but it wasn't as if i did that deliberately. not a single question was asked about whether we were okay, etc. she was also really rude to our nice tow truck driver who was helping us unload our bags, practically shoo-ing him away. not entirely sure whether it was because he was a tow truck driver. after we checked in, because it was almost 11.30 pm and we hadn't eaten all day, we asked whether there was somewhere we could maybe get a light bite. she said no everything's closed - and then didn't offer us anything herself. i've been to b&bs where we've gotten there late because of traffic, and the owner has opened up the home and asked whether there was something s/he could fix for us. nothing. absolutely nothing. we took our chances and wandered around bruge a bit to see if we could find somewhere and a nice tavern offered to make us something simple. the next morning, we had thought that we were going to have to find a taxi to holland to catch our train instead of driving, but then when we found out that the car was fixed, my partner went to ask her for help to order a taxi. she got really annoyed with him because he had walked into the communal breakfast room to ask her for help (we had already had our breakfast) and instead of saying how can i help, she responded brusquely that there were other people eating breakfast. the taxi that was ordered was late, we were worried that we would not be able to make it to pick up our car from the garage to drive to holland for our motorail so we tried to get our insurance company to order another taxi. she got annoyed and said that if we were going to try a different taxi company she would have to cancel the one she ordered for us. and i said, look we just need to get to the car urgently because we had to drive to holland to catch a train - and her response was 'i have a relationship to keep with the taxi company' rather than, 'what can i do to help you' (for example offer to drive us to the garage?!) not once in the less than 12 hours we were there did she voluntarily inquire about us and how we were. it was just a shocking and inhospitable experience. bruges is a lovely place and everyone else we met during our misfortunes with the car were kind and helpful which made her conduct all the more inhospitable and surprising given she is in the hospitality industry. i have never written a bad review about anyone before but felt compelled to do so after our experience with her.

as for the room, it's a basic room which was really overpriced for what you get. the breakfast was fine. and if you're there for the town, the location is good. so if you stay out of her way, i'm sure you'll have a nice time. but if you're like us and you like b&bs because of that personal touch, you won't get that.

We stayed a night in Brugge and enjoyed a room at 't Geerwijn. Chris was out of town, but her son Lawrence was our host and did an excellent job. The room was small but plenty roomy for the two of us. The house itself was remarkable. The sitting room and dining room were beautiful, and had remarkable finishings. Our breakfast was enjoyed with folks from Belgium, Canada and England. We had fun talking about our common likes and what are thoughts are of each others countries and cultures. Don't miss this location if you are going to be in Brugge.

The B&B location could not been any better or more in a central place if you would like to discover the inner Brugge. A few minutes walk to "everything". We traveled by car but there's a garage nearby (9 euro/day), the B&B is easy to find (car GPS :)). Stayed for 2 nights.
Very good mail communication with Christine (made a booking a few months ahead).
Lovely room, on top floor, quiet area so we got a good night sleeo. Very good breakfast.
And a lovely friendly house cat :)
Free WiFi is a plus.

Room Tip: Van Gogh, top floor. Steep stairway though.

We stayed for 2 nights in t'Geerwijn in May this year and really enjoyed ourselves. The house is centrally located and is at least a 20 mins walk from the station, you can take a taxi there but we decided to look at the pleasant sights along the way. The rooms are clean and comfortable enough and quite reasonably priced. Chris was very prompt in reply to our e-mails and only met her once on our arrival before she left for a holiday so her charming son Laurence prepared our lovely breakfasts. Would recommend staying here as it is much better than staying in a hotel.

I had high hopes for 't Geerwijn. I had read all of the positive reviews on TripAdvisor, and when I made arrangements via email and phone with Chris (the owner), all of her responses were reassuringly prompt and courteous. I had my fingers crossed that this b&b would work out well. I have two main complaints, one larger and one smaller:
1. Because we have a child, I booked the Van Gogh room, which Chris explained would be the best for us because it's the largest room in the house (she told me in an email that it is the only room in which a 3rd bed would fit comfortably, and she also mentioned that it had an en suite bathroom). So, we were surprised to discover, upon checking in, that we'd been assigned to a different room -- a smaller room on the 2nd floor whose toilet was located out in the hallway. When I asked Chris about our room assignment, she apologized and said she'd made a mistake by giving the Van Gogh room to another family who had arrived a day or so earlier (who were still there). I understand that it was a honest mistake -- but still, I would expect more professionalism from the proprietor of a B&B. The room we had was very cramped: the extra bed was partly wedged under the desk, and it was hard to walk between all the furniture in the room. We were also not expecting to have to exit our room to use the toilet. Our daughter sometimes wakes up in the middle of the night needing to use the bathroom, and guess what? Because she didn't feel comfortable leaving our room by herself, she woke us up to accompany her. So, there were a variety of reasons why we were disappointed to be assigned to a different room than the one we'd booked. When we checked out, Chris offered to take 5 euros off our final bill because of this issue. The gesture might have been nice, but c'mon. Five euros is nothing.
2. My second complaint is a smaller one; however, I think it still merits mentioning. One morning at breakfast Chris asked if it would be all right if she entered our room with a workman during the day, while we were out, to take some measurements in the closet for a new shelf. We said that was no problem. Late in the afternoon we returned to the b&b to rest a bit before going out again for dinner (I think it was around 5:00 or 6:00). There was a knock at the door. It was Chris and the workman, who was holding the new shelf. Chris asked if they could come in to install the shelf. We were lying in bed -- watching TV and resting before dinner -- and yet we all got up, helped Chris move the furniture around (remember I said how cramped everything was with the child's bed in the room?) in order to give the workman access to the closet. In retrospect, I should have just said "I'm sorry, but now is not a good time" -- but it just wasn't my intuition to say no, I wanted to be polite. I really didn't think it was very sensitive of Chris to have the workman come in at that moment. Couldn't the shelf have waited until the next day, when we were out again, or even better, after we'd checked out of the room?
Final words: The b&b is, in general, nice -- and the breakfast was fine. Chris seems like a nice person, in fact. It's just that I thought she made two relatively serious mistakes with us, and we suffered as a result.

Madam,

First of all I am very sorry that you did not had a pleasant stay in our B&B, I apologize for the two unpleasant situations, but I have offerd the ability to move to an other room on the second day of your stay.and even offer you a supplumetery room for the price of 1 room.

I'm also sorry that you have experienced the entry of the carpenter. I naturally asked to come at another time, but it did not work for him, not even the following day. it was a small work to do that toke only a few minutes

I hope the beautiful city of Bruges was able to charm you and
I wish you and your family many other fine holidays.

With kind regards,

Chris

Three Canadian women spent three nights in the 'tGeerwijn and we were absolutely delighted with it. We had two rooms which suited us perfectly.
The owner was on vacation but her son was outstanding as a host. He was charming and helpful and gave us great tips for enjoying the city. The rooms and bathrooms seemed freshly renovated and the breakfasts were friendly and generous. It's a beautiful old house in a perfect location, a few minutes walk from the town centre and all the attractions. It was very quiet, clean, comfortable and welcoming.

Room Tip: Yes, there are steep stairs but the hosts help with luggage.
