We came from UK to stay for 2 nights. As previous reviewers said, there was a strong smell of sewers when we arrived & got out of the car by the back of the hotel, but we did not smell it at the front. It is definitely not the canals - there is a problem with a sewer somewhere. We came with friends & had 2 rooms booked. The male receptionist was amongst the least welcoming I have ever experienced - I would expect a "welcome to Bruges" or "is this your first visit?". He did not crack a smile. Our room was average, but when we opened the curtains we found our window was opposite a brick wall about 10' away, with 2 large floor to ceiling windows in it, displaying a storage area for hotel furniture etc. We did not have net curtains, so when a member of staff entered one of these rooms they could see directly into our room. An unpleasant outlook. Everwhere we went in Bruges the locals were non-smiling & unwelcoming. The food in the restaurants was mediocre at best, & expensive. Twice we started a meal with soup of the day, both of which were clearly powdered out of a packet & awful. 3 of us had lasagne one day, which had a scattering of tinned minced meat between 2 of the many slices of lasagne. Inedible mostly. Back to the hotel - one of our party stood for 10 minutes at the bar next to reception one day hoping to order drinks, but was ignored & gave up. This was a shame, because the bar/reception area was warm & pleasant for a drink prior to going into the town. Breakfast was quite satisfactory, plenty of fresh croissants, pain au chocolate, bread etc, plus meats, cheese & bacon & eggs. The pool was pleasant, although rather a scary green colour, & at the end of a day walking round Bruges, it was nice to have a little swim & lounge by the pool. It would have been great if the hotel put a steam room or sauna in - there is plenty of room in the pool area. When we checked out, the female receptionist was as unfriendly as the male one, just took the key without saying anything, such as had we enjoyed the stay. I would definitely not stay here again - there is so much choice in Bruges, should I return.
