“Full of character and delight”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

We stayed here for two nights and couldn't have asked for a better stay. The welcoming and service was exceptional and the room simply sublime. The room was very large and the bathroom had a floor to ceiling stained glass window which gave the whole room lots of character and charm. The hotel was central and we were made to feel at home. The breakfast was freshly prepared and a great start to the day with quality ingredients and generous portions. Definitely wish to return and thanks for a wonderful time.

My wife and I stayed at the Karel de Stoute (Charles the Great) for four nights at the beginning of May. We arrived in Brugge by train and took a taxi which cost 9 euro.
If you have limited luggage and are fairly fit you can walk in about 20 minutes

It is a small family run hotel situated in an historic, listed building in a quiet street a few minutes’ walk from the main square ‘Markt’ The hotel has bags of charm and character.

The rooms are on the first floor and second floor and accessed via stairs. There isn’t a lift (elevator) so this might be a problem if you have severe mobility problems

Our room was clean and comfortable with en-suite facilities: toilet, bath with shower; hair dryer; TV and also tea and coffee making facilities. The room was cleaned daily and towels replaced

A continental breakfast is included in the room rate.

The owners speak several languages, are very friendly and eager to help. They suggested places to visit and recommended various restaurants and bars.

There’s a well stocked supermarket less than 10 minutes walk away – turn right when coming out of the hotel, then first right and then right again at the main junction. It’s about 50 yards on the right. Check this out for competitively priced beers and chocolate. Also all the ingredients you need for a picnic to take to one of the local parks!

I recommend the following restaurants and bars:
Bistro De Schilder, Jan van Eyckplein 13. Excellent restaurant serving Belgian food – the Flemish stew was delicious!
Cambrinus, Philipstockstraat 19. Superb! One of the ingredients used in all dishes - whether starter, main or pudding - is a Belgian beer. Booking is advised. Highly recommended
Le Trappiste, Kuipersstraat 33 is an excellent cellar bar serving a wide range of Belgian beers. You can try 5 different beers in special rack for 10 euro. Beware though-some of the beers are very strong!
‘t Zwart Huis, Kuipersstraat 23. A few yards from Le Trappiste and up a short flight of stairs, this wonderful restaurant is set in an old building with stained glass windows and high beams. Live jazz and blues music.
Comptoir des Arts, Vlamingstraat. This cellar bar has a blues theme and occasional live music. We were lucky enough to catch a gig by an up-and-coming young blues band called ‘Blues Vision’

We also visited two other bars – Brugs Bertje and Staminee De Garre, which were OK but small and filled up quickly

In sum, Brugge is a stunning city with something different round every corner, and the Karel de Stoute an excellent and charming base from which to explore

Room Tip: There are fewer stairs to climb if you ask for a room on the first floor. Obvious, I know, but....!

A great hotel, set in a quiet neighbourhood just 5 minutes walk to the Bell tower and all the shops. Stayed here with my wife for two nights. The hotel owners (mother and son), couldn't do enough for us, providing maps and business cards for local restaurants etc. We were in a room at the back of the hotel, and would best be described as functional. It was fine for us, as we didn't spend too long during the day in the room and we slept very well. I'm told the rooms in the main house have more character. The breakfast was fantastic with freshly squeezed orange juice and a fruit cocktail as a starter. There was an ample supply of coffee and a buffet of bread, croissants, ham, cheese, jams, cereals etc. We had a drink on the last evening in the cellar/bar. It's just a shame we were the only ones in there as it had a great atmosphere. Overall we would recommend the hotel and would certainly stay there when we next go to Bruges.

A quiet little hotel close to the centre of Brugge. We walked to everything. As others have mentioned the personal service from the owners is quite special. Our room was clean and comfortable while a little tired. Breakfast was included and was served in a beautiful room again with lovely personal service. The stairs to our room on the second floor were hard work after a full day of sightseeing but hearing the carillon play from the bell tower was delightful.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor.

My husband and I had a wonderful stay in this lovely hotel. It is well located on a quiet street a short walk from the Markt and an easy walk to everything to see in Bruges. The room we stayed in was clean, well decorated, spacious, and had a very pleasant, romantic feel. The breakfast included with the stay was wonderful with an assortment of meats, cheeses, breads, yogurt, fruit, and cereal, and fresh squeezed orange juice. Overall we felt it was an exceptional value for the price. The Mother/Son owners were very kind and helpful and had many recommendations for tourist sites and restaurants. We would definitely recommend this hotel to any of our friends or family and would consider staying again if we ever make it back to Bruges. It was a bit of a trek from the train station to the hotel especially with our heavy backpacks but doable. Like most of the old houses in the low countries the stairs in the hotel are plentiful and steep. Just considerations for those with large amounts of luggage.

We stayed over valentines weekend, unsure of what to expect from Bruges and the hotel. But what we found was so unique, Karel De Stoute was such a wonderful find, the owners couldn't have done any more so helpful showing us all the best places to visit and explore. Rooms were perfect cosy, modern & quiet for a good nights sleep to recharge after a long day sightseeing, exactly what we needed. Continental breakfast was lovely and the bar is such a lovely place to wind down or for a pre drink before you go out for dinner. We loved every second, such a gorgeous place to visit, we loved it so much we have booked again for New Year! See you again soon :) x
