“Peace in a busy city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2013

Bruges in summer is very busy; the garden and church of the Begijhof are a little haven. A working monastery (Benedictine nuns, who sing their Offices and have Mass daily), it is a space of calm from the tourist crocodiles, and gives an idea of the (now lost) world of the religious sisters or Beguines who used to live here. It almost seems as if it was built to screen out the bustle of outside, and has always seemed to me the perfect refuge.

“Highlight of our trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013

We went around 11:45 a.m. so that we could attend the noon service. Shortly before noon, a nun rang the bell inside the church. We were sitting off to the right side and a nun encouraged us to move to the front center section so that we could more easily see the nuns as they sang acapella. For some reason, the chairs were facing away from the front. The nun helped us to move the chairs so that they faced the front.

After the 15 minutes of singing, the nuns continued for another 15 minutes of silent praying. At this time, one of the nuns invited us to an adjourning room and gave us a quick tour.

I asked one of the nuns if I could take a photo of her. She asked me to meet her outside. She then took me to the living room of her house across from the chapel where I took photos.

The museum is also worth a visit. Buy a gift card that includes a small piece of lace for a memorable souvenir.

“Beautiful, peaceful sanctuary”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

The Beguines were a group of independent women who lived together in a commune, but each with their own house. It was an alternative to the usual medieval woman's choice of marriage or convent. I came here to honour these women but was overwhelmed by the sheer peace and beauty of the place: when I visited the central grass area was full of daffodils.

“Peaceful retreat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

A great place to retreat to away from the touristy crowd. The setting is spirit-filled, peaceful, quiet (except for the occasional tourist groups who can't seem to respect the request for silence on the grounds) and simply beautiful. The rustling of the trees in the compound, the rustic residences skirting the perimeter and the old chapel/church provided the reprieve from the noise in the market square. Managed to attend evening prayers where the nuns came out to say prayers in the church. Would love to return to do a guided silent retreat here.
