“Double-decker church”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2013

Many visits to Bruges, first time here but not the last. I had no idea what this corner of the Burg contained- there is a relatively simple (come on, this is BRUGES!) gloomy, solidly-built stone church at ground level with the most wonderful sense of peace (subtle signs plead for silence) Marvellous.
Outside, a winding stairway leads up to another church, highly decorated, flamboyantly colourful, which contains a Genuine Medieval Relic; a crystal phial containing Christ's blood. Whatever your belief, it is impressive to join the hundreds of year's old river of humanity to view this object, and make of it what you will.

“Breath-taking”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

Not religious in the slightest, but I really am fascinated by religious structures and music. The Heilige Bloed Basiliek was one of the first places I visited in Brugge. For just pocket change, you can touch the blood of Christ in a breath-taking basilica with gold detail and gorgeous sculpture.

I wasn't sure how to act when walking up the steps to see the man who would uncover the blood of Christ for me to touch or pray over, but I just took a long look and thanked him for his time. I wasn't sure if there was a time limit, but it didn't feel like there was and there certainly wasn't a line. You're allowed to touch it, but I guess because I'm not religious I didn't feel the need to hold it so I just felt the gold trim of the vial to inspect the textures whilst admiring the blood inside. You can tell the blood is old because the edges of the inside of the vial where blood has dried almost look like rust.

The place itself was truly awe-inspiring and peaceful. Not many people inside and I'm not sure it actually gets busy. Definitely a sight to see. It's very easy to find and just around the corner from the Markets and Bell Tower. Highly recommended.

“Beautiful outside - but be away from crowds”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

It is an interesting architect from outside - maybe you don't need to go inside. The "blood" is there and you can take a picture if you pay extra, but... not sure. I had prefered outside than inside.

“Amazing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

Not a very religious person but this was an amazing stop along our trip. We didn't even realize where it was until the last day. The museum was under construction when we were there but we were still able to go into the chapel and view the holy blood. The Basilica is located right in the town square next to the town hall. Definitely a must-see.
