“Very beautiful hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 22, 2012

We had read reviews of this being a dated property but still wanted to experience it. The location, right next to a canal is excellent. As it is a heritage property, there are no elevators and the rooms are up the narrow staircase. The rooms are tiny but is expected, as this is not a tasteless chain of hotels, but a unique experience. In any case, Bruges is so beautiful, you won't spend much time indoors. The restaurant overlooking the canal is excellent and the breakfast is served here every morning... a perfect start to your day. Ticket point for canal cruise is just outside the hotel and there are plenty of good dining options right in front. The lady at the front desk is very polite and helpful. Overall, we had a very pleasant stay.

The hotel is beautiful and we couldnt have asked for a better location, it was right next to the canal. The decor in the lobby and the breakfast/restaurant room was lovely especially if you like oldy worldy type things. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The views from the rooms were great!
If i had to say something negative about the place it would be that the rooms could do with renovating slightly (scuff marks on the skirting boards) however this really wasnt a problem as Brugges is so nice that we didnt spend much time in the hotel. I would definately stay here again or recommend it to a friend

Room Tip: The rooms in the attic are quite small but great views!!

The Duc de Bourgogne is located in the heart of Bruges. All the pictures you see of the canal have this hotel in it. It is located across the canal from the hotel filmed in the movie "In Bruges". It is tricky to find. You must ask for specific directions since it is inside the walls of the old medievel city. It sits inside a wonderful little courtyard with two restaurants outside its front door. Yes, the hotel could use some refresh, but the location and the service was wonderful. The breakfast was super and we even had dinner there one night. We sat at a table near a window overlooking the canal. The dinner was excellent. Great service and great food. All the staff were very friendly and knowledgable. The price is excellent for a hotel in this location. Try to stay on a higher floor if you can the views are wonderful. If you are in Bruges you should be walking around eating chocolate not sitting in your room anyway! Great visit.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the canal side on a higher floor if possible.

It's convenient, but the owners need some lessons in giving directions on how to initially find the hotel. Pretty good price - included a good breakfast, which is eaten in a lovely dining room overlooking the canal. As mentioned, the bed is pretty bad - the sheets are rough as sand paper and the pillows flat. What worried us the most was that about 3 a.m. there was a loud disturbance in a nearby room. It was frightening as if someone was being harmed. However, the instructions on how to use the phone were illegible, as were the numbers on the archaic telephone. There was no internet, so we couldn't use the Skype on our iphone. We couldn't call for help for them or us and felt very unsafe and isolated up there on the third floor. These elements made that one part of the trip rather unpleasant. Over all, though, I'd recommend the Duc. The service was warm and friendly, if in hindsight, these other problems could be remedied. Note: no elevator, but someone carried our bags up as we went to sightsee. Also, no wifi, altho they'll let you sit in the lobby of the restaurant and use it, but you feel kind of conspicuous doing that.

Room Tip: I liked the one we had - it had a small window overlooking the canal - But find out ahead of time ho...

This hotel has 2 things going for it... location (very well-situated & picturesque) and price (115 Euros per night during high season including breakfast). However, it is sorely outdated and run-down. The furnishing in the rooms and hallways are in sad condition. The beds are uncomfortable with scratchy sheets and blankets and flat pillows. There's no a/c. Lastly, there isn't a real shower... there's a handheld shower head that you use in the tub which makes for a tricky shower experience.

The staff is friendly and the breakfast was good, but I wouldn't return here unless the rooms were renovated.

Looking over some of the other reviews, there is a clear difference between the hotel (more of a B&B) and the restaurant. We did not eat there except for the included breakfast so I cannot comment on that aspect except to say that it has a spectacular view.

Our room was on the top floor and was afforded a window overlooking the canal. Very nice. The room was a little dated and the shower was a bit tricky with the slanted roof, but everything was clean. Slept well.

But where Duc de Bourgogne really shined for us was the service. Extremely friendly, amazingly helpful, always accommodating. We just wished we could have stayed for more than one night.

Finally, you just can't beat the location.

Conveniently located, tucked away behind the Burg and directly on the water, this was more of a B&B than a hotel. While the rooms & common areas are dated, the price, at 75 euros a night, including breakfast, was perfect. The staff were very friendly and I would return on a future trip.
