“Enjoyable short stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 6, 2013

We stayed for one night on recent mini break. Our room was on the third floor at the back, clean and comfortable. Bathroom perfectly adequate, with a shower and small bath. Breakfast was fine, plenty of variety including hot food.
Staff were pleasant and helpful, we paid for wifi during our stay, no problems.
As we weren't leaving Brugges until late afternoon luggage was safely stored at hotel.
Although building work at the front of hotel, as mentioned by other reviewers, certainly didn't cause us any problems.
Very central for all attractions, about a 10 minute stroll from the main square (probably much quicker if you don't look in shop windows!)
All in all a very pleasant stay which we wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

My review does not differ significantly from other recent reviews. The hotel is very well located. Only a few minutes walk from the railway station, and next to the two main shopping streets that run alongside each other to Markt Square. The reception staff are very helpful. Out room was on the 5th floor at the rear, which is an attic conversion with a Velux window. This is made up for with a lovely view over the town Belfry tower and churches. The room itself was more than adequate for our 2 night stay. Shower was on the small side - very small in fact. The bed was perfectly comfortable, and it was very quiet, despite being near to the lift. The breakfast was OK in quality. Was having ours at around 9am, and a lot of the hot food, particularly the eggs, were quite cold. A lot of reviews make mention of the building work at the front. This did not affect me. So overall I was pleased - 4 star however??? Stayed in many better 3 stars. I give it 3+

Room Tip: My 5th floor rear facing room had a great view of the town, but if we were lower down we would only...

Dear CIM15,
We thank you for your visit and review that seems very honnest. Everything was OK: location, friendlyness, breakfast, clean... The rating '4 stars' is not ours, we are regularly controled and meet with all the prescriptions of a 4 star hotel. Then again: pêople booking a superior or junor room experience better to stay in a 4-star hotel. So we would be very pleased if for your next visit you reserve a higher category of room type

The Portinari Hotel was adequate and functional. We stayed here for 2 nights (Sept 25-26) and thought the hotel was nothing special. The location was great, although the front of the hotel was undergoing construction. Also, while not the fault of the Portinari Hotel, there was roofing construction ongoing at the back of the hotel that woke us up at 7am each morning and kept up the noise throughout the entire day.
The room itself was tiny and the bathroom even tinier. The shower stall was by far the tiniest we have ever seen. My husband could barely fit in the shower stall as it was so awkwardly configured.
The Portinari Hotel provided a good breakfast buffet as part of the price of the stay. We noticed there was a strong odour in the elevator. Not sure if it is the thick carpet that lined the entire elevator, but the smell was very noticeable and unpleasant.
Overall, the Portinari Hotel was very pedestrian, basic and it will not stand out as a highlight of our hotel experiences.

Dear J_M_S_Toronto,

Thank you for your visit. We are pleased to read that overall you enjoyed your stay with us. You have reserved a standard room that is described on our website as follows:
'Reap all the benefits of a four star hotel, and still have enough budget left over to enjoy Bruges to its fullest. Our Standard rooms feature a luxurious, comfortable bed with crisp sheets and a harmonious interior'.
People that are willing to spend a few euro extra can reserve a superior room equiped with bath tub and shower. It's a pitty that the standard room did not meet your expectation, but we experience more and more that people book the standard and expect always an upgrade free of charge.
The roofing works going on in the city center... We truly can say no more then: this can happen in a city center. When closing the window and swith on the airconditioning could avoid a lot of noise. It is not always possible to sleep in a city whith the rooms wide open without any noise.
We will be very pleased when you visit us the next time you are in Europe

We have spent 3 nights in this hotel. We had a room on the 4th floor, which is already a roof floor, we did not find it problematic, rather interesting. Our windows looked at the square in the front. The room was quiet and comfortable. Staff was very friendly and helpful. It is true, that renovation works are still ongoing, but apart from the visible effects, we did not sense any negative experience. Breakfast was just excellent, including coffee. Regarding the tea making facilities, yes, maybe it would be reasonable to have in the rooms, but not a must. The only thing that could be developed is internet service, as you have to buy wifi code (costs 5 euros for the entire stay), and is a bit unstable sometimes. Apart from this, everything was good, we had a great stay here!

Room Tip: We got room 42 on the front side, roof floor, it was OK, no complaints at all.

Dear Messin,
We are looking forward for your next visit. We also try to improve the stability of our WIFI, but this is still influenced by the number of users in 1 building. Our provider has promised with a new fiber network to improve the service

We arrived here on a Sunday after around 3pm with no reservation needing two double rooms. We had previously gone in to two other hotels asking for two rooms. One wanted €90 just for the room that didn't even have a bathroom and the other one only had 1 room left. This hotel had two rooms and gave us a discount for it being a Sunday and having two rooms. They charged us €95 per room and we had a room facing the square which we asked for and we knew to be extra. The room was a very decent size with two single beds pushed together which I'm not keen on but as it was only one night it was fine. The bathroom was a lovely size, very clean, nothing broken or misplaced with clean fluffy towels and the main room have a wardrobe with plenty of storage and hangers. Including a fridge with drinks and a price list (expensive though- a water was €3) and there was a safe in the wardrobe. The beds were comfy as were the pillows (there were extra pillows in the wardrobe) and we both slept very well. We had the air con going all night and it made very little noise so didn't wake us. Breakfast was included and there was a lovely selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, boiled eggs, cheeses and hams, toast and breads as well as hot selections such as bacon scrambled egg etc. very nice and well cooked.
The staff were polite and friendly and we would stay here again

Room Tip: We chose to have a room facing the square but as we were there on a Sunday and there's nothing o...

Myself and the good lady stayed for just the one night. The place is clean and quiet. The bed was fabulously comfortable and the hotel receptionist was extremely helpful. The buffet breakfast is fine and plentiful. We arrived in Bruges by train and the hotel is an easy 10 minute walk. Likewise the main square is also an easy 10 minute walk.

This hotel represents good value and I recommend it.

Dear Ferretmeister,

Thank you for your comment. We should put more effort in thanking satisfied customers, rather than replying to tiptoeing people that are unhappy because they could not achieve a larger compensation for a 'so-called' inconvenience. It was a pleasure to have you here and we are looking forward to your next visit.

Have just returned from a 3 night stay. I would not rate this as a 4 star hotel and would say that in the UK this would be a 3 Star at best and probably a 2star due to lack of tea and coffe making facilities in the room. First impressions were that we had paid to visit a building site as the front of the hotel was all fenced off. The outdoor seating was non existent at the front and the whole of the front canopy was being replaced. To get to the hotel we had to walk through the building site although this was improved later with fencing moved to allow access at the side. Not good as we had to negotiate around a tree with an Iron grill round the base(a nightmare when my heels got scuffed by going down the gaps!), and as it was raining we had to leap over quite deep puddles. The hotel was described on LastMinute as "Charming hotel in Bruges" certainly not so charming at the moment. The room was 53 on the 5th floor and had a musty smell especially in the bathroom as if it wasn't properly ventilated. The next morning when showering the drain wasn't running away and we had to turn the water off and wait several times so that we didn't flood the bathroom. This was rectified same day when we complained and the Musty smell also had disappeared. There is a cracked tile in the shower area, there is no window and no fan to remove steam and the shower door sticks. Clearly a case of poor hygiene/maintenance of the shower !YUCK!. Be aware I am 5' 3" tall and the hairdryer is so high up on the wall I coud only just reach to remove it from the wall bracket without having to stand on tiptoe which my husband thought highly amusing. The second evening we returned to the hotel at about 10- 10.30pm having eaten and we were looking forward to a quiet beer in the bar. We eventually summoned the night porter by using the reception bell as he was nowhere to be found. We asked to order drinks and were told no the bar wasn't working !! This was just about the icing on the cake. I asked at recpeption the next morning what time the Bar closed to residents and was told its a 24/7 Bar. Not our experience.! So in all a disappointing experience, however on the plus side the staff did rectify the bathroom issue quickly and after the problems with the Bar we were surprised with a bottle of Cava left in the room by way of an apology for "all of the inconveniences". I would suggest if you are looking for a Charming hotel you at least check the building work is competed. The decor is tired and the rooms very basic for a 4 star hotel. Defnately needs tea and coffee making facilities. Bruges is delightful but not sure I will return to this hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back will be quieter and get a view over rooftops to the towers of Bruges which are all...

Dear Sue G,
Thank you for your comment. We appreciate your point of view and will try to improve our services. Thre were of course no building constructions, our terrace in front of the hotel (outside) is being renewed. We put some fences in order to guarantee the safety of our visitors. We are always willing to provide an extra hairdryer, that is not attached to the wall, a simple request during your stay could avoid a lot of trouble.
