“Very nice hotel, pricey extras”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2007

My mum and I just got back from a 4 night stay at the Sofitel Brugge and overall really liked the hotel. The service was excellent (helpful, friendly staff), the facilities overall were great (nice heated indoor swimming pool, comfortable rooms - lighting a bit dim but very spacious for Europe and ultra comfortable cosy beds!) and the location was very central (opposite bus stops - so you can easily get a bus rather than a taxi from the station - and a shortish walk into town via the main shopping street.) Had the weather been better the hotel also has a pretty little garden which looks nice to relax in. Just a couple of pointers about the hotel and Bruges in general:

- try to request a non-ground floor room - upon arrival we were told we'd been upgraded to a deluxe room (great!) but it was facing the street and there was a lot of noise both from traffic and from water pipes from the swimming pool in the same corridor. The hotel changed us to a quieter 2nd floor room without any problems the next morning.
- as others have said before, if the breakfast is not included in your deal it's really not worth it at 21 Euros per person - unless you eat an awful lot! Lots of little breakfast places nearby in the main shopping street, and a supermarket!
- also watch the phone charges in the room - use the lobby machine, much cheaper!

Some recommendations for Bruges:
- the canal cruises are great fun and very good value at only 5 Euros per person - a must do!
- clothes shoppers will enjoy the main shopping street - Steenstraat - to our surprise the shopping wasn't all frumpy lace and souvenirs at all, some nice and reasonably priced clothes shops too! It's not London or Paris but it's worth a look.
- Sunday's probably a good transit day as lots of things are shut. But if you are there on Sunday, Est winebar (in the smaller shopping street running parallel to Steenstraat) is excellent - lovely food and wine, great atmosphere, non smokey and fab live jazz from 8pm. We just saw the ad on a city map so went on the offchance and were surprised by what a little find it was. Real mix of ages and friendly service. In general restaurants and bars are a fair bit cheaper than London (not hard!) - not a bad little Italian (including good menu for veggies, very inexpensive) was Romanos. Beware strict opening hours in Bruges though (12-2 for lunch in most places, then gap where you can't eat between 2-6!!)
- the dolphinarium wasn't bad, sweet dolphin display and nicely laid out although more to interest children than adults! No aquarium but a few other animals including interesting birds of prey. A quick trip on the bus.

Places to avoid:
- I read about another Italian restaurant someone had recommended - Bacchus Cornelius in Academiestraat - where the food was nice and inexpensive as stated. However what the reviewer failed to point out was that the waiters were rude perverts!! I'd recommend only men or women WITH men go there...give it a miss there are plenty of other nice restaurants in Bruges!
- the English Theatre of Bruges - nice venue, inexpensive tickets...but the quality of the shows is really bad. Think school play not fringe. Maybe the shows vary, I don't know, but the one we went to see only had about 5 other people in the audience - and we could see why! Even given the 10 Euro price don't bother!

But overall a pretty place to visit with friendly helpful people and a fair bit to do for a couple of days. Take lots of cash as not everywhere is card friendly!!

We enjoyed our stay at Sofitel Hotel, Brugges.
Hotel belongs to the part of a chain. We did not realise that the hotel was literally 2 mins by taxi from the train station, which cost us EUR 7.00 - you can probably walk in 10 mins.
The staff is friendly, you get a map on arrival, which was very useful. Hotel has a small swimming pool, much smaller, than it seems on the website pics. Nice little garden, several funcion rooms on the ground floor, which seemed to be occupied every night, but that did not bother us at all. We had a nice specious room on the 5th floor (you have a separate lift that goes up to that floor, as the other one only goes up till 4th floor). The hallway is very dark, but playing classical music. Tried the hotel's restaurant, where they serve dinner in the evening and breakfast in the morning. Dinner came to around 140EUR for two with half a botte of wine, starter, main course and dessert. The hotel must have been excellent, when it first opened up, as now it is beginning to get a bit old-fashioned and probably needs a little bit of makeover to go with the time. Impressed with the breakfast, though at EUR 21.00 per person - you get a huge selection of food to everyone's taste, even Actimel drink. A big Saturday only market is opened on the square just in front of the Hotel. A newly built modern building - music hall with the information centre just opposite the hotel also. Very, very close to all the main shopping streets and 10 mins walk to the city's main squre. We were a bit eaten by the mosquitos at night, so if you are travelling in the summer, don't forget to get the mosquito tablets, altough rooms do have aircon, but it is a tiny bit noisy to turn on at night. Impressed with a size of a huge bed, although the pillows were very lumpy. Watch out for Eurostar deals on this hotel if you are booking a ticket as well, book this hotel at the same time - great value for money! I don't think you will be dissappointed. Would definitely recommend it for a short stay.

My wife, 9 month old son and I drove to Brugge from London for the May 2007 long weekend. The hotel was very easy to find, and we parked our car in the a nearby underground parking lot (approx 100m from hotel). The underground parking cost EUR8 per day. The hotel room was great and was far more spacious than i expected. Brugge on the other hand was a bit of a disappointment. We found the town very unaccommodating towards children. On our first night, we went to dinner at 5:30pm at what looked like a very touristy informal Italian restaurant. Another couple with a baby followed us in and asked for a baby high chair. When we also asked for a high chair the waiter explained that they only had one, and then a bit exasperated said that he had never seen so many babies in the restaurant before (2 babies at 5:30pm didn't strike me as unusual). This continued during the weekend to the point that we felt very uncomfortable going out from meals.

In the 9 month's that we have been traveling with our son we have been to 5 different countries (mostly Europe) and have never experienced this before. Just something to consider when visiting this beautiful town with children.

My husband and I enjoyed a short break in Brugge. The Sofitel was exactly what we wanted. It has a good location, just a little outside the centre but walking distance to everything. The hotel has charm and character. The room was a good size, with a comfortable king bed and a cozy design. Also it had good soundproofing, because the hotel was fully booked and there was a big fair going on just outside the hotel, but we never heard any noise. The breakfast was an adequate buffet. The staff was good. When we visit Brugge again we will certainly stay in this hotel.
Brugge is a jewel of a town, but it is almost run over by hordes of tourists. Among other things, this affects the quality of the restaurants and cafes. We went into town for some dinner in the evening (restaurant 't Schrijverke), but the food was not very good. A dissappointment, because the Belgian cuisine normally is a treat.

We chose this hotel for a two night weekend break. Rooms are large and well appointed. We drove from Calais in a little over an hour. The hotel e-mailed me directions which were very clear and easy to follow. The public car park, situated underneath the square is perfectly safe and very reasonably priced - 17.40 euros from Friday afternoon until Sunday lunch time. No hospitality tray in the room, but room service is readily available and is quick to respond. Us Brits cannot start the day without our tea! The hotel is no more than a ten minute walk to the Markt and other "touristy" bits. We did not eat in the hotel because there are dozens of good restaurants within walking distance, all catering for tourists and locals alike. The hotel is very quiet and there is no disturbance from traffic. Staff are attentive and very efficient. All in all a good place to stat and I wold not hesitate to return.

What a lovely hotel! Friendly, welcoming staff, great location. We had a deluxe room with the most comfortable beds - feather duvets and pillows, blissful!

The hotel hammam and swimming pool were also really lovely and welcome after a day of sightseeing.

Very quiet and peaceful and a real oasis of calm, I'll definitely stay here again.

This is a very nice hotel in a great location in Bruges. When I reached the Brussels airport, by suitcase had not. I arrived at the hotel without the basics, and the gentleman at the reception desk provided me with toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, etc., without so much as being asked.

The bed was very comfortable. Almost too comfortable! The price of the hotel included breakfast, but since I was visiting the city on business (and working nights) I wasn't able to take advantage of this amenity.

The room has an in-room safe which is large enough for my laptop computer. Internet access is available via wireless connection, although there wasn't an option to bill the cost to the hotel room directly. Television was a little dated, with very few viewing options, but that wasn't really something I had a lot of time for in any case.

Location of the hotel is about a 10-minute walk from the main Town Square. There is a lot of shopping all within walking distance and beautiful sites to see.

A very pleasurable stay, and the hotel and the city are both worth a visit.
