“Great location, friendly staff but not so great shower and toilet facilities”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2011

We were camping for 3 nights with a tent and car at Camping Memling in June. On arrival the site looked fine but you could tell quite quickly the site is rather small. We booked an 80 square metre pitch which was fine. The ground was a little bumpy and had a concrete slab with small metal spike in the middle, but we worked around it.

Nothing really wrong about the site other than it being small and the shower and toilet facilities were not great. The men’s toilets really stank of stale urine. It was so strong I had to stuff tissue up my nose before entering. It was cleaned every day though, we saw him do it, but how well I don’t know. The shower cubicles were very narrow. There was one other thing, the bins did overflow towards the end of our stay and was stacking up all around the bins.

Great location to Brugges city centre, just a 10 minute bus ride away gets you into the centre. It did say on the notice board that they are installing new shower and toilet facilities in 2012, so maybe then it will rate higher. The staff there were friendly and happy to help. WiFi service was cheap and easy to get onto.

Room Tip: Book a 80 square metre pitch

We stayed Easter weekend and for a few days afterwards. The campsite was full, with little space between caravans / tents. This was fine though, as most other guests were considerate with noise etc.

The main problems were dirty unhygenic showers, featuring mould growing up the walls. The showers were consistently cold, aside from one day at approx 7am. When discussed with the staff it was indicated that this was due to the number of people using them and the system being unable to cope. However the situation continued even when the site became less full, and at less popular times. Toilets smelt and were not thoroughly cleaned.

The biggest problem was rubbish which was allowed to build up significantly so it was thrown in piles. No effort was made to dispose of this. There is a photo attached which got worse after another 2 days and still no refuse collection / disposal. I feel for those in the static caravan who were directly next to this.

Good location, but hygiene needs to be reviewed in order to make this a comfortable stay.

If you are merely looking for a base then this will do fine, expect nothing more. We booked a static caravan and were emailed a week beforehand to say that work would be going on the campsite. I did ask how this would affect us and the reply was just the noise. What they didn't say was that the work was literally a building site right outside the caravan. Other campers were moved to a quieter location but as we were in one of only two static caravans we could not be moved, no offer of compensation.
The caravan itself was spacious and well equipped, however this was the last week of October and the gas fire was broken, which left just one electric heater for the whole caravan. One of the blankets was covered in mould but we accept that unless visitors tell them they don't necessarily know this.
Facilities were poor, there was a bar that looked like it hadn't been used for 20 years and a communal room that was mainly locked. The woman was quite snotty with our kids when they asked to use it. However there is work going on so maybe they will improve facilities.
This campsite needs a lot of love and it could do well, being the only one near Bruges. But right now, the owners seem not to care that much.
Good value for a base only to visit Bruges but not recommended for families.

Small site, poor facilities but very popular as its the closest site to Brugge.
Not a lot more to say about it really, just an adequate site.
