Owner description: The historic center of Bruges has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000 thanks to its status as one of the commercial and cultural capitals of Europe and its enduring Gothic architecture. The Belgian city center is cited as a great example of a medieval historic settlement, even while it has evolved over the years.

“Perfect day trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

We found ourselves in Belgium with a free day so took the train from the airport to Brugge. What a treat! While three days would have been better we certainly packed in a lot in about 6 hours. Because it was Wednesday the market was open. What good luck! Unfortunately some of the churches are closed on Wednesday afternoon so we couldn't get in but we did see a couple. We also went to the presentation at the Historian and even though it was touristy, we had fun and learned about the history. Because of my love for educating children, I enjoyed all the hands-on fun. We had a nice lunch in front of the fire at Panier D'or even though the waiter was very rude. A stroll along the river was lovely as the sun warmed the winter day. Shops full of lace and needlepoint were tempting and of the many chocolate shops, we chose Pur Chocolat. Excellent and beautiful service at this little shop at Walstraat 1. Next visit we will take in a couple of museums but the weather was such an unexpected treat on this February day that we wanted to be outside to enjoy it.

“Perfect for walking, but wear sensible shoes as there are lots of cobbles!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

Medieval buildings and little traffic. Also the tourist office is very helpful with leaflets, maps and suggections. We particularly like the new exibit 'Historium' in the Markt which tells the tale of a day in the life of the city some 500 years ago.

“Very pretty town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2014

The main square was very pretty. The Belfry was a magnificent building which played various tunes from the main bells which could be heard throughout the city. We were not able to climb the Belfry as the queues were huge, so would advise the get there early! Lots of horse and carriage rides, but these did charge around 39 euros per 20 min ride and apparently they would also expect a tip. Eating on the main square was considerably more expensive so we would advise to walk up the many side streets where you can eat and drink much more cheaply. Lots of chocolate shops and other stores to buy things like clothes and lace.
