“Begijnhof Congres Hotel Leuven”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

Leuven is a lovely city steeped in history. The hotel has beautiful grounds next to a river and the former Beguinage community. The hotel has a four star class, excellent location, pleasant staff, wifi in the rooms, very clean and well kept. The room has a bathtub and also a pants ironing machine. Parking is not free (12 Euros per day), and the breakfast charge is 19 Euros per person. There is also a city tax which is added to the bill, so be aware of that. The gym is lacking, only two pieces of equipment. All in all an enjoyable stay, but in my opinion parking should be included as a hotel amenity and there should be a half pension option.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the gardens in the direction of the Beguinuage.

We came to Groot Begijnhof for a wedding in the nearby church and a reception at the Faculty Club next door, so this hotel was really conveniently placed. To cement the feeling of wellbeing, the wedding itself was a most enjoyable occasion.

So to the hotel. There was nothing much to complain about really... the location was lovely, the reception was friendly, our suite was nice, there was a coffee and tea maker, and the essentials were all there. The food in the restaurant was very good, and drinks from the bar came as ordered, albeit slowly. Breakfast was excellent, with a large choice and good quality. The bar normally closes at 11pm, but the bar staff did us a favour by staying open later to bring food and drink to our late-arriving friends....

But it takes a lot of effort to build customer goodwill with positive attitude and service, and not much at all to damage it!

When my wife tried to take a cup of coffee into the garden (10 metres away) so that she could drink it in the sunshine a staff member prevented her from taking it out, saying "it's not me, it's my boss". This seemed petty and changed our impression in a moment. The other negatives then became more significant, such as the flooded bathroom, only two coffee capsules for the machine, the short opening hours for the bar... The impression was of an establishment run for the benefit of its staff rather than its customers. So one star removed.

The standard room prices would be fine for a business (ie., expensed) trip, but individuals travelling on their own budget may feel that this is not enough hotel for their money. Good if you are getting a deal, expensive if you are not. So another star removed.

I am not sure if I would stay here again if I visited Leuven. There are other hotels nearer the centre of town that would be worth trying.

Beautifully situated, a calm and serene hotel, just a few minutes walk from centre of things. Couldn't fault the public areas of the hotel - everything you could hope for - so the actual room was quite a disappointment. Small room , only one glass and a coffee machine we couldn't get to work! The bathroom was far from four star - more tired Travelodge - a meagre supply of poor quality toiletries and a shower you had to wedge into place with rolled up face cloths.

But the gardens and outside seating areas are beautiful!

What a beautiful hotel, set next to the river and adjacent to the former Beguinage, which is worth a wonder through, with its architecture and cobbled streets, also check the history of this semi monastic area.
The hotel is retry nice, clean rooms with comfy beds, free wifi and a bath to relax in
There is a gym if you can call a multi gym machine and 1 cross trainer a gym, personally I don't

The restaurant for evening meals is ok but limited, go next door to the faculty club for mor choice or its only a short wal in to the town.

Otherwise lovely and very friendly

This hotel is located in a fairy tale portion of Leuven. Everywhere you look are beautiful buildings and gardens. My room was on the end and had two windows. One overlooking a stream and the other the back garden. Room was small and modest but adequate. Walls were very thin so hope for quiet neighbors. Breakfast was a great buffet. Dinner from the menu good. Many amazing restaurants in Leuven just a 15 minute walk. Be sure to eat at the Faculty Club next door. Staff all very helpful and work to assure your stay is comfortable. A nice grocery store is across the street about a 15 minute walk if you need something.

This is, overall, a good hotel. Staff is friendly and helpful, food is excellent, meeting facilities are good, setting in the historic part is lovely, just a stroll away from Leuven's city center (15 mins) bed is comfortable, rooms are clean, shower and bathtub with quick and plenty of hot water.

So far so good.

The room itself is good enough to rest but this is where it ends. No refrigerator, no safe or deposit box, huge coffee machine but just one capsule for one cup that is a bit bigger than an espresso.

Overall we as a group enjoyed our stay but coming from all over the world we would have felt a bit better if we wouldn't have to carry our passports & valuables with us at any time. Bad experience makes you do such things (might be unnecessary) but a simple in room safe would have done the trick. And a cold beer in your room once all work is done would be nice too.

Tiny additions that would make a big difference.

Stayed here in business and had a really comfortable and easy stay. Quite modern hotel surrounded by a much older Leuvan that brims with character. Staff were all very friendly and very helpful. Great selection of breakfasts to choose from. Only a ten minute walk from the picturesque centre of Leuven. Recommended.
