“Excellent location and great staff.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 4, 2012

The Ghent Marriott hotel is in perhaps the perfect location for visiting the city of Ghent. One block away from the main square and one block away from Gravensteen Castle, it is ideal for touring, dining out, and shopping. The rooms are clean and well appointed. The staff is very hospitable and well informed about local attractions and sightseeing. The front desk immediately offered both a map and guidebook for Ghent tourism when I said I was going out for a walk. In addition, the hotel has a great kitchen with delicious Belgian cuisine.

The hotel is built into historic buildings. One side looks like a modern typical Marriott hotel. However, the other side is historic Ghent architecture (see picture). Overall a great experience.

Great location and service-minded staff. The rooms are quiet, clean and spacious. Everything you would expect from a 4 star hotel. However, there is nothing really exciting about this hotel and like so many other hotels you pay extra for almost everything. Furthermore the windows don't open you will be looking at a brick wall... The beds are great though.

Service 7 /10
Location 9/10
Sleep 8/10
Excitement 6/10
Price/value 7/10

I would stay here again but first check out some other hotels or go all the way and take the suite!

The Marriott in Ghent is superb! We stayed for one night on our way from the UK to Amsterdam and again on the way back. Perfect stop over location. The service on arrival was exceptional, very welcoming and everything we expected from Marriott. The receptionists Stephanie and Fredrick, and the concierge D'Jeff are worthy of special acknowledgement. The rooms were exactly as requested - 2 interconnecting with an extra bed as 3 children. Even though the rooms are open to the central area of the hotel - we didn't have any noise problems. In fact we had a great night's sleep - very comfy beds/ pillows. The hotel is so well positioned in Ghent - right in the heart of the old town. You step out onto one of the most picturesque parts of Ghent. Lovely restaurants nearby and loads of history. We would certainly recommend this hotel. We will also be booking again as Ghent had a lot more to offer than just a stop over location.

From the moment we arrived I knew we had made a good decision: excellent location, lovely atmosphere, lovely breakfast, great bed, big room- it was a standard room with king size bed. Staff were very polite and service excellent. Not the cheapest but if you are stayin two or three days you cannot better it particularly for the location.

I don't quite get the overwhelming 5 star reviews for this place as if this hotel somehow was the best invention since the bread slicer. It's an average Marriott, as you can find in the thousands all over the world. Completely unremarkable. Yes so it's set right in the town centre. So is virtually every other hotel in Gent since the town centre is minuscule.
The room we had could have done with some updating/new decor, especially the bathroom. Who still has shower curtains in 2012? Bedroom window does not open. View was of the wall of the house opposite.
Bar waiter unaware of the promotions/packages offered by the hotel that we tried to redeem, even after studying the voucher issued by reception, he didn't grasp what it said.
So called "Belgian tapas" at the bar consist of a plate of indifferent cheese cubes and sausage cubes. Bordering on the inedible.
Checkout very slow and rather unprofessional in that the lady recited every item on the bill to me rather than simply handing me the bill to look over.
Breakfast ok, again nothing that would warrant this to be a 5 out of 5. Average in every sense of the word.
209 Euros/night. At that rate and with the facilities/service provided this rates 3/5 at best.

This hotel is right in the centre of town. From the front it looks like a quaint old Dutch house, but at the back it has a huge glass atrium with a nice (but expensive) bar. The rooms are clean, quiet and comfortable (fantastic beds!) and the breakfasts are excellent. But the best bit is walking out of the door and being straight on the canal.

Room Tip: The best would be to have a canal view but they are more expensive.

Situated in an ideal location. Room and food was okay.
Walking distance to shopping and attractions within the central Ghent area. Many restaurants are located within walking distance from hotel. Two days was sufficient to cover the major attractions.
