“A fantastic alternative in Ghent!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2005

If you are looking for a wonderful alternative to the tired old European hotel, try the Cuberdon Bed and Breakfast in Ghent, Belgium. It is an impeccably restored house in a residential neighborhood about a mile from the touristic center of Ghent.

The rooms (of which there are 3) are quiet and comfortable. One of the rooms has its own full bath and the two others share a bathroom.

A full breakfast--eggs, breads, cereals, pastries, coffee, juice, cold cuts and cheeses--is served in a cheerful breakfast room. We also picked up sandwiches in town a couple of nights and had dinner in the room, which is outfitted with microwave, stove, sink, and fridge.

The owners, Kurt and Juergen, lavish personal attention on their guests. They gave us a lift to the train station and to the ATM to get cash, and offered lots of tourism advice (even making some phone calls on our behalf).

The price is very, very reasonable for what you get.

The only downside I can see to the place is that it's not for people who like to be able to walk out their door and be right smack in the middle of "the action." It's a quiet residential street, and you have to be willing to walk (or get a lift, or take a taxi or a bus) to get into the center of town.

Ghent is just a short train ride from just about wherever you'd want to go in this part of Europe -- Paris, London, Brussels, Bruges, Antwerp.

You won't do better than the Cuberdon!

You will not be dissappointed if you stay with Curt and Jurgen!! Their hospitality is beyond compare. My inquires by email were answered promply, sometimes within minutes! Directions were given in detail and arriving was like coming home! We were here for surgery and Jurgen was generous enough to drive us to the hospital! A short tour of the City Center was also given by Jurgen who with out a doubt is proud of his city! We also found the internet access to be one of the most valuable amenities. The difference in time back in the U.S. made using the internet a much more effecient way to communicate with our friends and family. A truely remarkable gift! Check out their www site. Everything there is true and then some!

Their friendly and prompt replies to my numerous email messages would be a telling sign of the wonderful time I had while staying at the Cuberdon B&B. Jurgen and Kurt were accommodating and excellent hosts during my 10 day stay in Gent. Their description of everything was exact though their own hospitality should be excessively complimented as well. Any question I had was answered and requests I made were handled without a problem. My room was extremely comfortable and the bed which was like sleeping on a cloud provided me with restful sleep each night. The bathroom was also very spacious and clean. The kitchen was quite large as well and a great money saving feature at the B&B as well. Besides the daily chocolate croissants that were available with breakfast, I was able to use the kitchen to make lunch and occasionally dinner -- there are also several grocery stores in the area. The B&B is about a 15 minute walk to shopping areas but the availability of public transportation make getting to the city center and train station quite easy. It is also nicely situated on a very safe quiet street near some great neighborhood restaurants. If you get the chance to visit Gent, you should definitely stay at this B&B. The price is right and the service and accommodations are excellent.
