“Quite amazing - a must visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

It was pouring down with rain when we were sight-seeing in Ghent and our main motive was to find shelter. Ostensibly it is a museum of folk art but has developed way beyond that with its masterly collection of hundreds of home movies that try to portray the life of ordinary people in days gone by.

It is set in a former children's hospital so there's an emphasis on childhood.

The building itself is worth a visit in its own right.

A must visit.

“Broad appeal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2012

This is a great little museum with something for everyone. Set in a former children's hospital, the museum showcases toys and traditional shops and their wares from the twentieth century. There is an excellent collection of films and music recordings documenting the day -to- day life of the people of Gent. Unlike many other museums, Alijn also provides information in English.

“Wonderful ecclectic collection highlighting they way people lived”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

This is a not to be missed thing to do in Gent for those who love collecting there is something for you all. Nostalgia reigns supreme here . There are so many different things to see many mind boggling ..rooms from 19th century stores . circus posters .. retro rooms full of whats now in that was just everyday stuff.... sorry I don't have the words to describe it properly .. I am a collector and this was heaven (or hell because I could not take it home with me ) .
The staff are genuinely friendly and helpful as it is some of their lives on display..

Highly recomended

“Go back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

A house which shows how people used to live from 1900 to 1970s. There are lots of rooms to see. Afterwards you can sit in the garden outside for a drink and very limited snacks.
