“not the best castle you will ever see”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

Situated in the center of town the castle seems like a must "see" pre-requisite. If you have never been to a castle then I would visit the inside. Otherwise I would probably give this castle a pass. My favorite part of the castle were the views of the city. The castle has wonderful views. Beyond that I did not think it was very impressive. There were some displays inside but I felt that they were rather sparse. This is what probably did not excite me too much about this castle is that there was not a lot to look at inside the castle.

“Great Castle!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

This was my first tour of a castle and it did not disappoint. My travel companions had previously toured many castles throughout Europe and all said this was one of their favorites. Visitors have access to nearly the entire castle, not just a few chosen sections. There are a lot of stairs, so it is not handicap accessible. The self-guided tour starts with a fascinating display of weaponry and armor, and another section contained a display of torture devices. We toured the castle at our own pace, which was great. I was fascinated by the subterranean area where supplies and personnel were shipped in via canals. This castle is a great tour for people of all ages, as long as they are physically able to handle lots of walking and stairs.

“A great little castle”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2014

This was a great little castle. Perfect size, not too big, to take a 3 and 1 year old round. Some nice exhibits coupled with turrets and walls to walk round and pretend to be knights. Perfect. The only thing that could have helped would be a cafe, as after one hour the babies required some food and a sit down, but the square opposite the castle provided for us in that sense, and some excellent beer for the grown ups.

“Worth a visit!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2014

The castle is nicely done but there are a lot of stairs so not accessible for anyone with mobility issues. The weapon displays are very impressive as are the torture devices. The route within the castle is clearly marked and easy to follow. Located in the heart of Ghent surrounded by shops and restaurants to visit after your tour. A taxi from the train station cost 8.50-10 euro but it was worth it as it would have been a long, cold walk.

“Don't miss it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2013

We really enjoyed our visit to Gravensteen Castle. When we received our movie guide we were told that people either love it or hate it. Well, we loved it. It guides you through the castle using the story of Philip and Mathilde to bring it to life.
Don't miss this when you're in Ghent.
