“Beautiful but chilly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

I stayed here with my husband just after Christmas. We had planned to cosy up in our room and the spa for a relaxing weekend. Our room wasn't ready on our arrival so after waiting in the bar for 45 minutes (and sampling some local beer!) we were given another room with twin beds, though we had booked a double. The staff were very helpful and brought us a double duvet to use over the beds pushed together - not ideal, but it was a huge room so we didn't complain.
We ventured into historical Ghent which is a very short walk away, to the Christmas market (the stalls weren't very impressive but it gave the town a nice festive atmosphere). It snowed, which was fun until we got soaked and decided to return to the hotel to warm up in the spa. However, the spa was disappointing. Only the sauna was working and it was the coldest sauna I've ever experienced. We put water on the coals and nothing happened, not even a sizzle. It was like sitting in a room with a warm radiator.
Back in our room our clothes were still soaked as our room was cold. We tried turning up the thermostat but it would click out before the room warmed up. We phoned reception but were told that the whole hotel was set at 25 degrees and could not be overridden. It's great that they have a strong environmental policy but it was below zero outside. We went down to the bar and lounge rooms but they were colder than our bedroom. Worried about our clothes being wet for the next day, we were given an electric heater for our room. My pet hate is cold hotel rooms, especially for romantic breaks when I don't plan to spend the whole time wrapped up in a jumper and slippers!
The room was nicely decorated and very clean, with a huge corner balcony overlooking the garden which would be great in the summer, but the bathroom was freezing. There was no bath, just a huge shower that I only used once as I couldn't stop shivering in it. Thinking a hot drink might help, my husband went downstairs to get a cup of hot water for a teabag I had brought from home, as I was on a very limited diet at the time, and we had no kettle in our room. They gave him a whole teapot of boiling water, though he asked for only one cup, and it was only when we checked out that we noticed they'd charged us almost 4 Euros for this! We were also charged for a beer we hadn't ordered, but the reception was so busy with others checking out, that we didn't bother going back to question it.
Breakfast was fantastic with a massive selection of quality food, with a very good gluten-free loaf and gluten-free cereals served. We tried to eat in the hotel restaurant but was told it was fully booked, so it's worth booking for a weekend evening. We found some very good restaurants in town so it wasn't a problem.
I don't like to complain when I'm on holiday, but here I felt like I was forever phoning reception about various problems. To the staff's credit, they did find solutions, but it has put me off returning. It's a shame because the hotel is beautiful, as is Ghent itself, but I certainly wouldn't recommend staying in this hotel in the middle of winter!

Room Tip: If it's cold out, I would request a room with a bath, as the shower in my room was huge, open an...

The hotel entrance was a little hard to find, looked more like a restaurant. The hotel is very elegant and clean. I would suggest it is slightly formal as well, if you intending dining there. Reception and booking in was a quick efficient process.

Our room was on the first floor of the main building with its own balcony overlooking the garden. The room had a laminated wooden floor, which was quite cold under foot. Other than that, it was quiet, comfortable and had a lovely swish bathroom with a giant shower, but no bath.

Our stay was in the run up to Christmas. The hotel is located only 5 minute walk from the beautiful and historic town centre, which had a very good Christmas market.

Finally, when checking out, we were presented with an additional “city tax” of 7.50 Euro levied per night stayed. This was a surprise to us, and we found out to our cost it is charged at all the cities we stayed at in Belgium.

We went there for a long weekend. It is a 4 star hotel and I can see why. The reception feels grand and the room we stayed in was spacious and clean. The breakfast was very good with a great variety and self service. They had a very small gym and swimming pool. It is very good for food and very close to the historic centre of Ghent - about a brisk 5 minute walk away. Definitely would recommend it.

Great location in Ghent's old town with worldclass contemporary design, especially in the restaurant, bar and public areas with pleasant & stylish people (for Belgian standards) in the evening. Rooms and suites and the small pool are on a similar level. Friendly reception and fair pricing. On the downside, there is no valet (not a real 5 stars hotel), and one must walk (possibly in the rain) through the inner courtyard to reach the rooms. And - terrible for a cigar aficionado - there is a total non-smoking policy (would have been so nice in the fireplace lounge !!!).

This was a beautiful property with really nice decor. The entrance is really dreadful though.
For a property of this quality I expected a proper entry, doorman, or at least electric doors.
Bellman were no where to be found. Really challenging trying to open and close doors with luggage.
The hotel and rooms are very nice although. The restaurant and lounge are exquisite.
I would possibly stay here again or perhaps look into what else Ghent has to offer in terms of accommodations.

We went for a short break in October and unfortunately we chose the week the Ghent film festival was on and apparently the hotel is the HQ for the event. It was rammed with people.

The staff although, absolutely lovely, did not understand any of the questions we were asking them - like how to get to the Ghent altarpiece - or where certain places on the map were.

The room was excellent - impeccably clean and a great big bathroom. The bed was very comfy and the little gift and note on the bed was a really sweet surprise.
I have to also mention the spa!! We had a couples body massage and it was amazing - well worth it - that is a must visit.

Location was really close to the centre but far enough away there wasn't any outside noise.

All in all I think the place is probably outstanding - just not when all of its resources are focused on an event and not its guests.

Most has been said about the hotel and it is true. Great location, great staff etc. We had an executive room which is a small stylish apartment. We had a kitchen and lounge with a separate bedroom. Large bathroom and walk in wardrobe. Pictures on website really don't do the rooms justice.

When we arrived at 1550 hrs and our room wasn't ready. Took 30 mins before we could check which isn't great but that was our only issue.

Don't bother with taxi's as the tram system is great. Take tram (red) 1 to buurgstraat (excuse the spelling) and walk 2 mins down 'Ramen', you are pretty much at the hotel.

I doubt this will be read by travellers who go for new yr 2016 but just in case you do scroll that far be aware that ghent shuts down on new yrs eve. Restaurants only serve a set meal to booked patrons. Everywhere else is shut. I mean everywhere. Pizza Hut, McDonald's, Xmas market, spar and cafes. We got caught out and never got to eat that night apart from some crisps in the pub!!!

Recommend a visit to hotel and gent.
