This hotel is good, no complaints, although we found the decor strangely at odds with the beautiful building. This wonderful old building has been treated to the modern makeover, using brightly coloured bold striped carpets, very large print wallpapers all adorned with the 'splash it on' style painted canvasses in the narrow corridors, you then pass into bedrooms painted deep oxblood red with wooden floorings and again the splashy paintings. The whole effect was disturbing and not restful, this lovely old building with its high ceilings and evident history deserved a little more thought. The odd decor does however work quite well in the champagne bar. Ghent is well worth a visit - although if you are driving, as we were, the one way system is a bit of a nightmare not helped by the fact that a lot of the roads were being dug up. We got the Eurotunnel to Calais and drove to Ghent, a really easy run and with 4 of us in the car, also a very cheap way to make the journey (except the last bit in the city itself, for which I would recommend a word with the hotel before you travel to find out if the roads works are finished, and if they are not, ask for a route in to the hotel car park)
