Often dine at the Kerstentuin and we are never dissapointed. Consistency certainly is their thing.

“Snackbar”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2012

This place has become more of a snackbar than a proper restaurant.
Used to be a classic in Ghent but new owners changed the place into a greasy spoon level place.

“A restaurant, as every restaurant should be”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2011

This restaurant is located at the Brusselsesteenweg, a wide, ugly road, linking Ghent to Gentbrugge. Lots of petrol stations and old, dilapidated houses. Not exactly a place where you would expect to find a superb restaurant, as it had been recommended by a friend. It is located in an unassuming villa. When my wife and I entered the restaurant, we instantly knew that we came to the right place. This is in a nutshell why:
1. the restaurant is quite large and airy with lots of space between the tables, privacy assured;
2. it is simply, but stylishly decorated
3. no music, thanks God;
4. it was absolutely full – in the middle of nowhere on a Monday night! - the only remaining table was ours; thanks to my wife’s insistence I had booked a table;
5. we were immediately and warmly welcomed by the owner, although he must have been very busy.
The rest of the evening was in line with this first impression. We were instantly served with delicious olives and small snacks. While we studied the intriguing menu, we were served two glasses of the white house wine, which – unlike the house wine in most restaurants – was absolutely superb, very concentrated with a floral nose. We choose the four course surprise menu (€ 45):
- turbot on a layer of spicy spinach
- fresh fried crispy prawns in a light garlic sauce
- very tender deer with deliciously prepared vegetables
- a sweet great desert, I still haven’t figured out what it was.
Every course was out-of-the-ordinary, very imaginative, in short just delicious.
The accompanying wines were recommended by the owner and fitted remarkably well with the food.
The service is very friendly and correct, but lacks the ceremonial atmosphere of many ‘gourmet’ restaurants nowadays, which give you the impression that food is a serious matter and not a means to have an enjoyable evening.
De Kersentuin is not a cheap restaurant, but in terms of value for money, it is one of the two best places I know in Ghent and its surroundings.
