“Nice Reward Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2007

We stayed at the Marriott Brussels on a Reward Stay. First, the good news: the location is wonderful. It’s very close to the Grand’Place, across from the Bourse (making it also very convenient to the Bourse Metro station). Lots of restaurants and supermarkets in the area so you can eat out or take food back to your room. The rooms are well-appointed and kept up nicely. When we dragged our rear ends in after an overnight flight from Chicago, during which neither of us slept, they gave us an early check-in.

The bad news: and check-in was a little confusing. Granted, they were gracious enough to actually find us a room at 10:30 AM rather than leave us to wander around in a jet-lagged daze till 3 PM, but first they said they had a room with 2 Queen beds. Fine. We got to the room and found 2 doubles and knew we’d either be kicking each other all night or sleeping in separate beds. So, we went back downstairs and asked for the King we’d originally booked. One would be ready in half an hour, they said; would we prefer an upper or lower floor? We told them a higher floor and they said we could have Room 538 and gave us a pass to the Executive Lounge in the meantime. When we got downstairs to check in they’d assigned us 124. Well, at least it had a King bed and a nice view of the Bourse.

The room was equipped with only one bathrobe even though the reservation specified 2 people; it also had only 2 large bath towels. More would have been nice. The Executive Lounge was pleasant although we didn’t get to see much of it. Breakfast (which included breads, meats and cheeses) was being cleared away when we arrived so we missed it. I dropped in later to get coffee and use the Internet, and by 4 PM our key to access the Executive Floor had been deactivated. Well, they didn’t promise it for the length of our stay but I was disappointed!

Internet charges were extortionate- similar to every Marriott and Hilton property in Europe. I was happy to find that I was close enough to get McDonald’s wireless (the hotel is above McD’s) for 10 Euros for 2 hours rather than 10 Euros for one hour with the hotel service. Maybe that lower floor was a good move after all.

This was a great place to use Marriott points; I'd also recommend it if you can get a decent rate (say, $200 and under per night).

“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2007

Got a good deal and spent easter in the Marriott. Friendly dutch guy at check in. Problematic was that the carpark was full, but a bit further a cheaper option was found with enough space left.

We have mixed experiences with breakfast. First time a not so great experience. This time it was like traffic jam hour. Completely busy as if everybody wanted breakfast at the same time. Then the hotel is not capable of dealing with this promptly. A lot of stuff not ready: waiting times at scrambled eggs, no milk.

The next day (checkout day) we came late out of bed, thinking breakfast was done and over with. Staff from the hotel seeing us with suitcases offered to tag them for storage and talked us into the breakfast where we were the last ones, but still enough options to chose from. Friendly staff at breakfast, asking us if we needed more before they really closed up. A much better experience then the day before.

The room was nice. Not too big, but clean. Airco was functioning. A basic Marriott room as they can be found in many of their hotels. A lot of tv options.

Great about the hotel is its location. In front of the "Beurs". So in 100 meters your completely downtown. The sightseeing busses are close. Manneken Pis is not that far away. So no need for subway of metro.

  • Liked — the location in downtown Brussels
  • Disliked — busy time at breakfast

“Nice city Honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2007

Stayed here for 3 nights as a short honeymoon. Was more than happy with the hotel and very pleased when we drew up outside - although was a bit cheeky and e-mailed ahead stating that it was our honeymoon and could we have a great room and view, did take marriage certicficate and when our room number showed that we were on top floor I though our luck was in and we got penthouse suite - we were wrong!, although room was great, we only had small round cabin window and our view was facing an office block. Was very clean and spacious however so can't complain too much. If your looking for a laugh in a pub like we were, you have to dig if you want a belgian pub with a laugh, so where did we end up - an Irish Pub! Which is just at the next door of the hotel. Karaoke pub also next to pub, never managed there as only open certain nights.

Eating out you need to watch - we got ripped off with some wine - about £40 - and I aint no wine buff - just double check prices for everything - ended up getting take away kebab - Gorgeous! Booze not bad - spirits expensive.

Try walking the streets behind hotel and don't always get drawn to the Grande Place area - although just as nice.

Literally in the centre and 2 min walk from Grande Place and most 'mussel' restaurtants. Hotel directly across from tour bus stop - highly reccommend - I was a bit concerned I was going to look like an old boring tourist at 25 years old - but it's a must - it's gorgeous!

Amazing amount of homeless - only about 2 bothered us for change - they seem to have their own little community and if your lucky you might catch them bathing in the small waterfall/pond outside MacDonalds that's below the hotel.

Don't get too excited and the pise - Statue tiny and not much fun - try a waffel though - full of cream, fruit etc.

Try Brussels out - it's the kind of place that when you've been once there is no need whatsoever to visit agin - we have highly reccommended it though and deffo that hotel!

Certainly a place that we found 3 nights was enough.
Enjoy!

“Great Hotel in so so City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2007

I stayed at this hotel from March 16 through March 19. The hotel was fantastic for the most part. Rooms were good size with very, very comfortable beds and soft, thick comforters. TV was adequate and contained many channels in several languages including English, French, Dutch, Italian, Arabic, and German. Bathroom was clean with good shower and good sized bath tub. Hotel provided shampoo, soap, etc. The breakfast was the best that I've had in Europe. Omelette station, bacon, sausage, many beverages, fruits, breads, oatmeal and more. All of this was all you could eat for one price. Everyone was friendly and provided efficient professional service. One complaint was the charge to make a toll free call from room. (2 euros, I think) I wasn't charged for the one call I made because I am in the Marriott rewards program, I think. It is hard to make a toll free call in Belgium. The phones seem to be programmed to prevent calling a service like MCI so I had a hard time making calls back to the US. I did find the last night that the McDonalds beneath the hotel has a public phone, and the toll free number worked there. I got a great rate of 103 euros, including breakfast for two. The rack rate would have been 299 euros plus 25 euros per person for breakfast or 349 euros!!! At that price, I would have had some complaints. I would definitely stay there again, but I doubt that I will return to Brussels anytime soon. I found the people very standoffish and rude. Be careful in the restaurants near the Grand Place. They post specials for around 15 euros and then give you a much higher priced menu once you are seated (they do offer a free drink, but it's small). I had to ask several times for the special menu. It's almost impossible to get tap water with ice in Belgium, but I understand that it's their way! Brussels is small and can be easily seen in a few hours. The little --- boy seemed to be the most popular site. I did take a day trip to Bruges and did enjoy my day there. The Flemish (Dutch) speaking people are nice and friendly. It's the French speaking (Walloons) who are unfriendly, and I speak French and love to visit Paris and the rest of France as well as the province of Quebec in Canada. I wish I had stayed in Bruges and made a quick side trip to Brussels, but again, the hotel was fantastic and made the stay better than it would have been otherwise. There is a good escargot stand just across the street from the hotel. I believe a dozen were about 4 euros and very tasty. The chocolates are great, no matter the price. I had one Belgium waffle, and it was very good with chocolate and bananas. The tram to train station is like an amusement ride so hold on. Two can ride for the price of one nights and weekends (per Rich Steeves) but they don't have any signs telling the tourists that. If you must visit Brussels, you will have a great stay here. Join the Marriott rewards program (it's free to join) so that you can get the best rate and rewards such a SkyMiles for staying there. Just be prepared to not feel welcome in most places, if you are only a tourist...

“Excellent choice”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2007

I'm reviewing the Brussels Marriot from, well, the Brussels Marriott. If you've seen photos of the front of the building, my room is right in between the flags on the 4th floor.

We checked in early (around 11:00am) and had no problems being put in a room. Total check-in time was 2 minutes max. They had us signed in and given keys very quickly. Plus, they did this in fluent English and with a smile.

We are on the 4th floor in a Jr Suite. Very nice, spacious, and with three floor to ceiling windows that overlook the street and a government building across the street. Great view, and super clean rooms.

As mentioned here, the beds are easily the most comfortable I've been in anywhere at any time. Superb.

The bathrooms on my 4th floor room are clean, large, and very functional. The breakfast in the concierge level room is adequate and very European (as it should be).

No doubt, I'd stay here again and recommend it. The Marriott isn't cheap, but a quality hotel in a wonderful location.
