“Good option for Brussels”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 25, 2012

I was positively surprised by this hotel after the walk from the station. Was upgraded to an Exec suite and the room was light and big with a seating group and office desk apart from the sleeping quarters. The bathroom was really nice with separate toilets. I liked the extra security of having to use the room key to use the lift - until I forgot the key upstairs and had to call my friends to come and pick me up :) Other pluss with the hotel is that despite it being so central - the rooms were really quiet.

Room Tip: We had a room on the 7th floor and it was nice and quiet

So, the search continues for a hotel in Brussels with a pool which is not the Renaissance (which is stupidly expensive when Parliament is sitting).

The Novotel's rooms are excellent, free wifi but too slow for streaming video. Pool is an odd shape and basically impossible to have a proper swim in. On none of the three occasions that I've visited has the jacuzzi, sauna or steam room been working which has been really disappointing as these facilities are this hotel's main point of differentiation. May give it one more chance but that's about it.

Location: 2 blocks from subway, close to main square (10 min. walk).
Frontdesk: very professional and helpfull.
Room: modern, very nice set of channels, new, clean, but bathroom isn't good. The shower box, has as a slippery floor and toilet is separed from the rest in a very very tiny room. Sleep is great, very quiet.
Breakfast: great, a lot of things, It's impossible to taste everything they offer.
Hotel overall: nice, new, modern, in a word. Fast. A very business hotel, everything is quick and efficient.
Free internet all over the hotel.

I am normally a great fan of Accor hotels. It's usually like McDonald's - you know you get what you pay for and it looks the same everywhere you go. But this time I am disappointed. From the service attitude to the lack of courtesy hand lotion in the room, it was below normal standard. If I had checked in to a budget version of Accor hotels, such as Etap or even Ibis, I could have lived with the poorly equipped bathroom, the short time frame of breakfast (ends already at 9.30) with the rush from the waiters of taking away the food as soon as 9.30 had passed, the opening of the door to my room despite the fact that I hung a "do-not-disturb" sign on the door and the cheap scribble note pad of 2 (!!) pages that was not replaced once I used it up (I stayed 2 nights) if I had stayed at Ibis or even Mercure. But I paid for a Novotel standard and expected a service and treatment matching the price. It was not. I will not stay again at this Novotel.

I was a little concerned because this was listed as a three star hotel. But I booked it because it got great reviews (four) on TripAdvisor. After having stayed there, I have no reason why it's a three star hotel. It seems like a four star hotel in every aspect.

Before I booked, I was puzzled by the Internet access charges/policies. Novotel's own web site says "free wi-fi" and "internet access (surcharge)" which seemed contradictory to me. Now I understand better. The hotel does have free wi-fi in the rooms but allows you to pay extra for higher speeds. The "free" speed is at least 512Kbps and was sufficient for my email and web surfing needs. You'd only need to pay extra if you wanted to download or stream something big.

Location is great. It's central, but away from the crowds. The street in front of the hotel is narrow (2 lanes) and busy at certain times, but I requested a quiet area and they gave me a high floor on the side street. They said it's a 10 minute walk to Grand Place, but I think it's less. We walked to/from the Brussels Centraal train station in about 10-12 minutes. It's also steps from two different Metro stations.

Anyway, we thoroughly enjoyed the hotel. It was quite nice. We didn't use the breakfast or pool so we can't comment on those. Sister hotel (Ibis) is next door for much less money if you're looking for a 2-3 star hotel.
