I don't like old hotels or 2 star hotels - so why did I stay? Partly it was the price of £48 a night, including breakfast from HotelsRUs website, and partly it was Tripadvisor reviews. The published price is 210 euros single (225 double) excluding breakfast. In a city I only want somewhere to sleep, wash & change. Verdict - it was good!
The location is very good. Apparently a couple of hundred yards from Gare du Nord station. I arrived via Eurostar at Gare du Midi/Zuidstation (everywhere's bi-lingual!). With luggage it is better to take metro line 2 to Rogier rather than th more direct underground tram line 3 as trams are very narrow & crowded with steep steps & narrow doors - difficult with luggage. The journey takes 10 mins. At Rogier, follow the signs for Place (Square) Rogier and you should reach ground level with the Hilton & Crowne Plaza on your right. Go down the road on your left between the SheritonTowers Hotel & Comfort hotel (which has Le Saint Germain Brasserie underneath). You can see the hotel 50 yards down on the right. For shopping & Lower Town sightseeing head back to the Hilton (see photo) and then aim for the City2 shopping mall on the far side of Place Rogier (about 100 yards from hotel). This is the start of the pedestrianised road Rue Neuve Nieuw, which has shop, restaurants etc all the way down to the Grand Place city square- about 15 mins walk. In particualr there are loads of restauarants on the left hand side (and Macdonalds!!). This avoids the closer Adolphe Max Laan road into the centre which others seem to have used. It's the one with sex shops at the top end, less good shops & traffic! Otherwise without luggage use the tram line 3 to Bourse/Beurs for Grand Place. On the way back to the hotel look for the 30-storey blue-lit Dexia building in Place Rogier - can't miss it!
The hotel itself is very old - both German & British officers used it during WW2 - presumably not at the same time! The rooms are a bit basic (see photos) - no aircon, wardrobe, hairdryer, kettle, bath in my room on top (6th) floor but suitable shower cubicle. Bathroom door didn't shut properly either. Heating by large old-fashioned radiator. Room, fittings & laundry were very clean, with large comfortable double bed that had good space round it. I suspect room sizes & layouts varied as hotel is old. The TV had 40 channels, including BBC1 in English and pay-to-view for 15 euros a day. Breakfast was as good as any I've had in Europe but not worth paying the published price of 12 euros. The owners also own the 4star Progress Hotel, which physically joins this one at right angles. It has recently been renovated & allegedly has aircon & wifi - hence earlier complaints of building work. The hotels share the dining room & bar. I found the staff very helpful, efficient & pleasant. They said Des Colonies is due to be renovated starting early 2007 - it was last done 6 years ago - starting at the top. They hope to have wifi in each room to replace the single computer in reception, but no aircon. Incidentally, they rank this as a 3 star hotel & I wouldn't argue with that.
In summary, for £48 a night, including breakfast, it was very good. Clean, quiet & 100 yards from main shops - what more could you ask for?
