“Very good location & price”

Hotel des Colonies

Dec 9, 2006

I don't like old hotels or 2 star hotels - so why did I stay? Partly it was the price of £48 a night, including breakfast from HotelsRUs website, and partly it was Tripadvisor reviews. The published price is 210 euros single (225 double) excluding breakfast. In a city I only want somewhere to sleep, wash & change. Verdict - it was good!

The location is very good. Apparently a couple of hundred yards from Gare du Nord station. I arrived via Eurostar at Gare du Midi/Zuidstation (everywhere's bi-lingual!). With luggage it is better to take metro line 2 to Rogier rather than th more direct underground tram line 3 as trams are very narrow & crowded with steep steps & narrow doors - difficult with luggage. The journey takes 10 mins. At Rogier, follow the signs for Place (Square) Rogier and you should reach ground level with the Hilton & Crowne Plaza on your right. Go down the road on your left between the SheritonTowers Hotel & Comfort hotel (which has Le Saint Germain Brasserie underneath). You can see the hotel 50 yards down on the right. For shopping & Lower Town sightseeing head back to the Hilton (see photo) and then aim for the City2 shopping mall on the far side of Place Rogier (about 100 yards from hotel). This is the start of the pedestrianised road Rue Neuve Nieuw, which has shop, restaurants etc all the way down to the Grand Place city square- about 15 mins walk. In particualr there are loads of restauarants on the left hand side (and Macdonalds!!). This avoids the closer Adolphe Max Laan road into the centre which others seem to have used. It's the one with sex shops at the top end, less good shops & traffic! Otherwise without luggage use the tram line 3 to Bourse/Beurs for Grand Place. On the way back to the hotel look for the 30-storey blue-lit Dexia building in Place Rogier - can't miss it!

The hotel itself is very old - both German & British officers used it during WW2 - presumably not at the same time! The rooms are a bit basic (see photos) - no aircon, wardrobe, hairdryer, kettle, bath in my room on top (6th) floor but suitable shower cubicle. Bathroom door didn't shut properly either. Heating by large old-fashioned radiator. Room, fittings & laundry were very clean, with large comfortable double bed that had good space round it. I suspect room sizes & layouts varied as hotel is old. The TV had 40 channels, including BBC1 in English and pay-to-view for 15 euros a day. Breakfast was as good as any I've had in Europe but not worth paying the published price of 12 euros. The owners also own the 4star Progress Hotel, which physically joins this one at right angles. It has recently been renovated & allegedly has aircon & wifi - hence earlier complaints of building work. The hotels share the dining room & bar. I found the staff very helpful, efficient & pleasant. They said Des Colonies is due to be renovated starting early 2007 - it was last done 6 years ago - starting at the top. They hope to have wifi in each room to replace the single computer in reception, but no aircon. Incidentally, they rank this as a 3 star hotel & I wouldn't argue with that.

In summary, for £48 a night, including breakfast, it was very good. Clean, quiet & 100 yards from main shops - what more could you ask for?

Spent 5 nights there with my wife. room was clean and had enough space for 2. bed was really comfortable and tv had a decent choice of channels. room could perhaps have used a couple more drawers for storage. shower room was a bit shabby but everything worked ok. breakfast was the usual strange continental affair which is alright if you like cold hard boiled eggs and salami. i gave that a miss. the public areas are spacious and quite stylish in a retro way. if you turn left out of the main door and walk past the ajacent hotel you find a restaurant called the brasserie grill. superb food good price highly recomended.

The price was right, but the location wasn't great. It sits
among all the biggies, sheraton, Crown Plaza and the like,
but it is a good 15-20 walk to the Grand Plaza and a couple
of those blocks are dicey. The staff was quite friendly, the room was clean and the breakfast fine. I just prefer staying closer
to the historic areas of cities.

“Loved the Decor!”

Hotel des Colonies

Jun 7, 2006

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon in March 06. I choose it because of the decor and I was not at all dissapointed! Walking into the lobby was like stepping back in time. Our room was also decorated to perfection (the headboard/shelf was awesome and perfect to hold chocolate - mmm! - and a glass of water). The elevator doesn't quite match the rest of the hotel but it seemed like there was still some construction going on (we experienced absolutely no noise disruptions).

The walls are awfully thin... but we only noticed it once or twice and not at all during inconvienent times. I do wonder if we might have been considered noisey neighbors but as far as I know there were no complaints. I noticed after we checked in (we were on the second floor) in that it looked like everyone who had checked in had been put on the 2nd floor. I would have requested a higher floor and one with less people on it had I thought about it at check in but it wasn't a big deal.

The shower is TEENY (it seemed like a mere 2x2 foot space - plus you had to step up to get into it and the ceiling was lower in there too - it's like the size of a phone booth). I'm 5' 9" and my husband is 6'2" (and big and athletic) - shaving my legs was impossible without leaning against the wall of the shower. And it was just funny when my sweetie showered. We only stayed for 2 nights so it wasn't a big deal and we just laughed about it.

Breakfast was your standard Euro layout - bread and cheese and cereal. I don't recall any fruit...

The location is SUPER close to the train station (we flew into Brusseles from Barcelona and immediately hopped the train to get to town) but the street it's on, Rue de Croissades, is very teeny and wasn't on the map we had. I suggest printing out a map prior to your arrival. We got lucky and happened to pick the right direction to walk in and found it.

The location is mediocre. To get to the "fun" part of town was about a 15-30 minute walk (I was 5 months pregnant at the time). ["Fun" as in shopping and restaurants]. I don't think there were any restaurants near the hotel - we had to walk about 20 minutes away to get to where food was. I don't think we ever bothered with a taxi while we were there. We ended up kind of bored of Brusseles (it very well could have been our location and not having a real plan as to what to do) but we loved Bruges. However, on our European trip, the best meal we had was in Brusseles. ORDER THE MUSSELES!!! The food was amazing but you had to travel far from the hotel to get to it. The hotel staff was nice.

Oh, do not bother with the hotel internet! It was expensive and seemed like dial up with a 28K connection. The computers are OLD. You're better off finding an internet cafe elsewhere where you can check your email in 5 minutes as opposed to 30 and it doesn't cost as much. Their little internet section or business center didn't look like it was used much because the desk clerk actually had to turn the computer on for us. Hopefully they were going to be upgrading that section sooner rather than later! The rest of the hotel looks antiquated in a very awesome way but the business center is also antiquated and that's not so good. We were just interested in using the internet - not faxing or anything so I don't know about other business-y type services they offered.

Oh, the room had no view but that wasn't a concern for us.

If you want killer ambience, this is the place!

Stayed here last weekend with my daughter and was extremely impressed with the character and quality of the hotel. Our room had been recently updated and was clean and pleasantly decorated. The staff were very friendly and helpful with directions and advice. I really mean it about the water pressure in the shower, it was hot and powerful! Just the ticket after a long day traipsing through the streets of Brussels. Right across the street from the North train station.
