“It worked for our group”

Thon Hotel Brussels City Centre

Apr 24, 2008

I brought a group of professionals here for a visit to Brussels EU institutions, picking the Thon mainly for its convenient location to the city centre, shops and the Metro.

The group liked it, good quality and clean, and helpful staff. Its a bit of a scrum (busy and cramped) at breakfast, but thats a minor complaint and I'd bring visitors here again.

“OK But rooms need a makeover”

We stayed here for 2 nights in April. The hotel lobby and bar area gave a good first impression, however, the rooms were small and the wall in our room was dirty on one side and had recent work done with electrics on the bedside, which was not painted over. The room could do with an update and include a safe. Our room was on the 25th floor and it was quiet. The beds were comfortable but only one pillow each and when we asked for more at reception, they said they had none as the hotel was full. They are a busy hotel and probably are not too concerned about taking time to do up the rooms ( a pity) as it is difficult to get a room centrally in Brussels.. The location is good. Happy hour for beer is 5-7pm!!

“A good stay in a very nice hotel”

Thon Hotel Brussels City Centre

Apr 8, 2008

My partner and I stayed in the Thon Hotel at the beginning of April 2008. It is very conveniently located less than a minute from Place Rogier (around 5-10 minutes walk from Gare du Nord and 15-20 minutes walk from the Grand Place). Don’t let the main road location put you off. The hotel is situation in the same complex as a Sheraton Hotel and an office block and the rooms are location in a block behind the office block which fronts on the main road. There is a staircase into the Rogier metro station just outside the hotel doors but in the main square there is another entrance with escalators which is easier when carrying bags.

Check in was pain free. Unfortunately they were full and unable to provide us with a double but the two singles pushed together were more than adequate. The rooms were well sized with a good sized fridge (for larger bottles), tv (BBC1 and BBC2 available) and tea/coffee making. The shower was very powerful (it felt as if you were having pins thrown at you). We tried the steak house next door to the hotel which was good value and provided very nice meals. Try restaurants away from the city centre (especially around the Grand Place) as they seemed to be very expensive (moules frites was €20 in one place we tried).

The sauna has magnificent views stretching from the Basilica du Sacre Coeur to the Atomium. The sauna wasn’t working when we arrived (other guests were complaining to us about it) but was sorted with a quick call to reception! Service was faultless. On request (handwritten note on the bed), the maids provided us with two extra pillows and the reception provided extra clothes hangers (despite the hotel being fully booked). You should time carefully when you wish to go to breakfast. There was little left on our first morning (Friday) due to the hotel being full but was very plentiful on Saturday and Sunday. The options included hot items, pastries and continental fare.

We managed to book the hotel – bed and breakfast – on a deal with the Eurostar website which including the travel from London St Pancras International. The hotel was an excellent base from which to travel to Bruges (which we did on Saturday) using the Gare du Nord as the station from which to travel from (around an hour - €13).

One bit of advice is to get yourself a guide book and explore! Nine hours on Friday covered all the major buildings and included a trip to Mini Europe (very camp) and the Atomium.

All in all a good stay in a very nice hotel in an equally nice city.

“On the frontier of adequacy”

Thon Hotel Brussels City Centre

3 of 5 stars
Etterbeek, Belgium

The Thon Brussels City Centre promises much--an elegant entry into the seemingly subterranean lobby, a sauna, and a generally sleek and modern presentation. But despite its four-star rating, it skates toward the border of 2-3 when it comes to basics like cleanliness (such as the stray used tissues I found in my bathroom cabinets) or with the extortionate charges for wireless web accesses--charges that negate the savings relative to nicer nearby properties.

Breakfast is particularly unremarkable--instant machine coffee, and no smoked fish despite the hotel's allusions to a scandinavian pedigree. Rooms were ok but small (and I did succeed in getting a double room upgrade for the asking), location good for this part of BRU. Rates were half of what my convention hotel would have charged, so there was some value, but this place could really soar with some effort.

“Unremarkable...”

Thon Hotel Brussels City Centre

Mar 19, 2008

A fairly unremarkable hotel, nothing outstanding to recommend it and nothing terrible to keep you away.

The room on the 29th and top floor was of a reasonable size, comfortable beds (2 singles pushed together always such a delight to sleep in), clean room and clean bathroom. The room was quiet, the staff were friendly and generally helpful (being told to get a taxi outside rather than have somebody phone for one was a bit of a surprise). The hotel was expensive €130 odd, plus extra charges for everything, €2.50 for a razor, €10 an hour of wireless internet. Breakfast charges at €15, always a favourite of hotels. As all I wanted was a coffee and croissant I skipped breakfast here and spent €2 elsewhere.
