We had a pleasant stay at the Metropole in Brussels though I would dispute it claiming to be a 5 star hotel. Starting on the positives, the lobby is amazing, the breakfast is excellent, huge choice. The room was ART deco and interesting in a faded kind of way. The things that could be improved that could raise this hotel to a proper 5 star are -
1. The luggage porter did not help me to take my luggage to my room, although I am 7 months pregnant. He was there but just stood looking at us. This is just lazy and sloppy service.
2. There are no tea /coffee facilities in the room
3. The downstairs toilets were dirty, smelling of urine, no soap in the dispenser and no towels - NOT a good first impression for a hotel claiming to be 5 star.
4. The staff were business like and impersonal - unlike 5 star hotels in Asia or the USA where staff get to know you
5. There are no dressing gowns or slippers provided - you can get a towelling gown at an extra charge - come on this is a joke!
6. The selection of fresh fruit at breakfast left alot to be desired - the bowl contained rotting fruit and was not stocked up daily.
7. The 'free minibar' is very limited but a nice touch. No spirits or wine included.,

I chose this hotel because I love Art Nouveau architecture. It is truly beautiful inside. I have no complaints with it. The staff was helpful, the housekeeping was great, my room was beautiful and had a balcony. My flight and six-night stay were only $1800 -- the same price as flight and only four nights in downtown San Diego. It is within easy walking distance of the Grand Place and the Comic Strip Museum The Rue Neuve is just around the block. The Metro station is right in front of the hotel. I ate chocolate every day.

I stayed in the Metrople twice in May and July 2009. The hotel is a really great old hotel in the Grand Style. It has a hugely famous and wildly over the top ornate bar and a famous outside cafe area. All the main public space are ornate old fashioned (in a brialliant way), and are out of another era. The reception desk is just classic. The rooms i had varied greatly. One was rather small and the other simply enormous, both slightly with an air of fading gentility but well appointed. I prefer the old section of the hotel with its very old fashioned elevator, and i would recommend you select this out of preference. The staff are excellent and the bar and cafe are great places to chill. It is very central and well known by everyone. I found it middleof the road price wise and their are good deals to be had. Try and get breakfast included. It isn't bad, but if taken seperately is expensive. If you like great old fashioned old dames of hotels you will like this hotel.

Like many reviews this was part of a Eurostar package, it definitely takes 20 minutes+ to walk from the Garde-Midi Eurostar station or 4 stops on the metro if you can figure out which line and platform you want. On arrival we found a film crew at reception recording a French music program pop video. We were quickly ushered to the desk where we were then pinned at one end for 20 minutes trying to book in between takes. The staffs were very apologetic but as this was late afternoon they should have made alternative arrangements at this peak check-in time.

The public areas we used are very grand with lots of mirrors, marble and gilt, although if you look up at the ceilings there is a definite need for repair. Our standard room was fine, the chandelier dominated and the décor reflected the general lobby style, it overlooked the inner courtyard so didn’t have an inspiring view, however it was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was very large if slightly and odd shape being on the inside corner of the courtyard. The only downside to the room was the noise from a service lift that started early in the morning, for me it wasn’t an issue but it did wake my wife. We didn’t eat in the hotel but took breakfast in the nearby square which is much cheaper.

The hotel has an excellent location close to the main square and with a metro station outside to allow each reach of the attractions such as the Atomium, Euro Parliament and Natural History museums. I’d definitely be happy to stay here again if stopping in central Brussels.

GETTING THERE:
Metropole is easy to get to using the subway. In fact there is a stop right outside of the hotel. It is also very easy to take the train into Brussels from Antwerp. I had no trouble finding it at all.
LOCATION:
Metropole is centrally located and it is very easy to walk to restaurants and major attractions.
HOTEL:
Metropole is a belle époque building that has been updated and restored beautifully. The hotel itself is beautifully decorated and felt very comfortable.
SERVICE:
The service was what I expected it to be for a high rated hotel. The front desk was fast and concierge made an excellent recommendation for my birthday dinner a restaurant (The Bella Queen which is about a block away). They also upgraded our room once they heard that it was my birthday which was a very nice touch.
ROOM:
The room we stayed in had a beautiful view of the street below and amazingly was not noisy at all. The room was enormous, bed very comfortable and the room was decorated to match the age of the building. The bathroom was also quite large, clean, well lit with all modern fixtures. My only complaint is that the hotel could be a little more up to speed and offer more modern amenities such as an upgraded mini fridge, air conditioner and television. Although all worked well they were just a bit dated and it could really give the hotel a more refined look. I would also suggest updating the wall paper, as it looked rather worn and in need of replacement.
INTERNET:
None, it is always nice when you are a tourist to have internet and I was disappointed that the Metropole did not provide this amenity.
RESTAURANT/IN ROOM DINING:
I would highly recommend the breakfast! Not only is there a huge variety of excellent food to choose from, the dining room itself is beautifully decorated!
OVERALL:
We truly enjoyed our stay at Metropole. You can’t beat its location and the hotel is very comfortable and catered to all of our wants and needs. If you are looking for a great place to stay in Brussels I would highly recommend Metropole!
