Aksum Coffee House is a stone's throw from the crush of the Grote Markt (Grand Place), sitting at the end of Spoormakersstraat (Rue Des Eperonniers), but it could hardly be further from the grasp of mass tourism
The shop is in a beautifully restored building but keeps to a strong Ethiopian theme in keeping with the freshly roasted coffee.
The espresso has an intense kick but with a subtle fruity aftertaste that will keep you going all day. The cheesecake was excellent too.
One might quibble about the consistency of the milk in the cappucino. But after walking the gauntlet of pushy restaurants and the endless shoddy merchandising of the already crap Mannequin Pis, Aksum gives Brussels some much needed cool - and hence deserves its top rating.
