Owner description: As soon as it opened at the end of the 19th century, the luxurious Old England department store earned an excellent reputation for its highly distinctive building. The entrance to the building is a jewel of the Art nouveau style while the rest is in perfect harmony with the neoclassical ensemble on the Place Royale, and just around the corner from the Grand Place and Central Station, no less! It's here in this architectural gem that the MIM took up residence in June 2000. The museum's reputation is mainly built on its extraordinary collections. With a wealth of some 7000 instruments, the MIM is currently an internationally renowned instrumental museum. Once inside, you'll embark on a true tour of the musical world. After your trip past the some 1500 pieces on exhibit, the instruments and their history will no longer hold any secrets: from viole da gamba from the Court of Brussels to the 20th century theremin, and even including the African kora! And be sure not to miss our area devoted to the instruments of Adolphe Sax. The MIM is nothing other than a place to experience music. An infrared headphone system allows each visitor to explore the thematic tours to the tune of the melodious sound of the instruments presented. Translation is no problem. Everyone knows that music is a universal language.

“Beautiful Building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2013

Not really interested in musical instruments, but the Art Nouveau building is a delight from the outside, so I was curious to go in as well. The fun factor once you are in is that your audio guide plays the sound of the instrument you are looking at. A bit disappointed that the building from the inside has been altered and only very few original details remain. The fin de siecle lift is very busy so you need to be very patient if you want that experience also, Before you return your audio guide at the ground floor, make sure you visit the basement first where the mechanical instruments are displayed.

“Cool bldg!”

I didn't actually have a chance to go in but the outside is amazing and worth a look. I'm sure the inside is great but I didn't have time.

“Tired of Art Museums?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

We were very surprised how good this museum was. Located in a beautiful Horta Art Nuevo building, the huge display of musical instruments on three floors was well displayed. The ability to listen to an instrument by just going close to the display was insightful and the technology was simple and effective. None of my group had any musical ability but all of us we fascinated. Who knew there was that many types of bagpipes in the world. The museum has done a wonderful job collecting a really wide collection of music instruments from around the world and from many different eras.
Food was good on the terrace with quick service. The view is a little over rated but still better than most restaurants.
One of the most interesting museums that I have been to. Do not miss it.

“Amazing place to spend a day!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

Set in an old Victorian Department store, some of the original architectual details are still visible but you may not even notice them once you are engrossed in the glory of the Museum. As you travel through the museum your proximity to an instrument display causes a sound track of that instrument to be played (almost like magic). Both children and adults enjoy this method of exploration.

“The building is remarkable and the roofterrace a must”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

The Museum is housed in a excellent example of Art Nouveau Architecture, one of the great assets of Brussels. The roof terrace includes a café and restaurant and a free spectacular vieuw onto the city. I often take guests there to give them an overvieuw of Brussels.
