...get in on the joke.
Every other city in the world has statues of kings on horseback, gods and godesses, women with torches, generals and presidents...
Brussels has a sense of humor.
It's not a statue of a legend, it's the legends about the statue. I love the story of a king who was distraught by his son being lost and vowing to erect a statue of the boy wherever and however he was found...only to have him be found peeing on a street corner...
A great statue? no. A great monument? no. A photo you'll hang in your living room? no, unless you have a really warped sense of decor.
But a great smile? Ah, yes...thank you Brussels.

Unfortunately the statue is being refurbished and is hidden by a tarp.

The mannekin pis is one of those things, that you should to see for the sake of seeing. Sure the actual 'boy' himself is a measly 1 foot tall, but it doesn't stop it from being 'interesting.' It is a nice walk from the Grand Place, and as you walk down the final stretch of the road you'll see flags and giftshops devoted to the mannekin. You'll probably see a small crowd around it. When you actually see the thing you may be dissapointed if you are expecting something amazing. However, the walk it self is fun, and if your hungry when you get there, there is a nice restaurant and a waffle stand (no surprise) within 10m of it. Even if you are dissapointed, it isn't a complete waste. I recomend it only as a "say you saw" sort of thing.

The small fountain (under 3' tall) of a naked cherub urinating is not really worth one's time. The Grand Plaza, the wonderful chocolate & speculoo shops, the museums are all worth more effort.
