The restaurant is a little difficult to find, but this only increased out excitement of looking for and finding this jewel in Brussels. The menu is kept on a huge black board and reflects the dishes available based on ingredients, most as I understand are locally sourced. Costs are kept within reason by only taking cash payment - no plastic money. I selected the Flemish beer braised beef (carbonadoes) and my wife selected the lamb ragu penne pasta, accompanied with a carafe of merlot. There were a few more vegetables in the braised beef than other restaurants also in the downtown Brussels area, which made the presentation much sharper and crisp. The meat did not need a knife and I did not find any fat pieces in my serving.
My wife's lamb ragu was an excellent surprise. The lamb served at Fin de Siecle was of much higher quality than the lamb ragu we ate in Seattle several weeks ago at the Stumbling Goat Restaurant.
The ambiance of the restaurant is best described as being alive, there was great conversation and good times being had by all. The tables are a bit close together, but not so close because you could enjoy your groups conversation while hearing the murmur and vocal syncopation of the guests in the restaurants.
The Waite staff was there when we needed them and were not a trouble to us when they were not needed. The staff stays constantly busy, but they did not miss a beat. My impression is they like there jobs at the restaurant and they know how critical they are to the success of the business.
Lastly, upon leaving we were asked how are dinner was, I commented it was marvelous (which came out more like mahvelous) the waitress understood me to say marginal and reported the response to the owner who came out immediately to understand the problem. He stated " I am sorry if you were dissatisfied, what was the problem?" We responded no" the dinner was great - it was marvelous" - mystery solved. It was cool to see such a quick response from the owner, reflecting his great concern on providing excellent customer service.
Summary - locally sourced food and ingredients, great wine selections, Beer too, Waite staff that speaks many languages
