“Outstanding Local Michelin Restaurant. . .(NOT a tourist trap)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

Excellent, warm service. Fresh, very taste food. Reasonable prices. If these are attributes that appeal to you, then you will enjoy La Maree, a Michelin-recognized restaurant. After making several trips to Brussels, I have learned that many of the best Brussels restaurants are located AWAY from the Grand Place, because that is where the local people eat. All the customers spoke French, but luckily for me the staff spoke English fairly well.

La Maree is located about 3 blocks behind the Marriott Hotel. During my first visit last night, I had Bourgogne Escargot and steamed codfish with butter. Fresh and exquisite! Be sure to save a little room for Tarte du Michou which is the light and fluffy house specialty cake. This meal was so good that I returned to La Maree tonight for Gray Shrimps Croquettes appetizer and monk fish with leeks. After eating all this rich food, I did tone down my dessert selection and enjoy some "healthy" passion fruit sorbet. Many other guests appear to order the mussels.

In a very nice and personal touch, Mario & Teresa Alves (chef), who are the owners personally greeted the restaurant guests every hour or so.

“very good fish and mussels and you must have the house dessert”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2013

This is one of the few restaurants in Brussels that I keep coming back to, both for business and with friends or family. It is very simple but everything they prepare is of high quality with a friendly service. It is not cheap, though, except for the house wine which is very good at a low price. The mussels and the cod are always very good and the house dessert called tarte michou is to die for. The only dish I would probably not repeat is the steak tartare.

“My favorite place for fish in Brussels; the sole and soul are unique!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

I have been coming to this restaurant for almost two decades, and there is a simple reason for this: I know of no better sole (and not for the lack of trying, in many countries), be it grilled or "Meuniere". Many friends and colleagues have added La Maree to their favorites after I introduced them. You do need to book (indeed, the place is small, and fills up), but it is worth it. No frills; just good food.
The key to this success: this place is privately owned and run by a very dedicated couple; she does the cooking, and he takes care of the customers (with one or two extra waiters, who have again been with them for years; another good sign). They buy their fish fresh most every day, and do NOT buy if they are not satisfied with the freshness. Their goal is quality and not turnover or size. For years they are getting very good comments, a returninig loyal customer base and a full rom most every night, but they refuse to expand since it would put the quality at risk.
A few tips: For starters do ask the boss to hand cut you some pieces of the cured ham (which is not on the menu, but always on the table in front of the kitchen). For those loving ray wings (not me), they apparently do not come any better anywhere else. The mussels are great (go for plain or white wine, so you really taste the mussels), and the fresh french fries are all-you-can-eat. I usually have little room for desert, but can tell you that the Dame Blanche is excellent (with fresh melted pure Callebaut chocolate saus).
By now you will gather that I warmly recommend this place....

“Great place for mussels (best we had in Belgium) and excellent service.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 21, 2012

Rick Steves recommendation. A bit out of the main tourist area, but not to far. We ordered 2 mussel (house special and marinera, 23 and 25 E each) and fish soup. Mussels were fantastic, best we had of the 6 or so places we tried in Belgium. Plump, fresh and with great sauces. The house ones were very rich, but both were great. Decent selection of local beers. Chef came bye to see how everyone was doing, and this night at least no tourists, all locals. Excellent.
