“Great location but Newly renovated....?? A long way to go yet guys!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2012

Firstly I must say the location of this place is second to none! Right next to the beautiful Grand Place and excellent value for money if location was all I was rating. However, when I read newly renovated I expected the renovation to have been completed. this is not the case with bare concrete stairs, unfinished/ open walls and exposed wires.

Contrary to other reviews we found the reception staff useful and polite (although not being able to pay individually by credit card is most awkward)- dont forget check in is at a different hostel though!

If you want a bed in a good central area next to all the action book here. If like us you expect things like clean bathrooms, working sockets, finished paint jobs and fitted carpets then look elsewhere. Simply dreadful finishing in the building, poor signage, awful staff and worst yet check in is around 1km away with restricted opening hours, i love Brussels but this trip was soured by this ramshackle of a hostel. No wifi, no breakfast and just one computer for internet access, i would not stay here again, it's a shame the Sleepwell hostel is closed for repairs because i always stay there.

Room Tip: Ask for the top floor, they are apparently ''deluxe''.

Actually, the location is incredibly, it is hard to be more central than at the Hostel Grand Place.

After a ~12 min. ride from the airport to the Gare-du-Nord we arrived the check-in-hostel about 10 min. later. We know in advance that we have to check-in in another hostel so we went there straight. The receptionist was very kind, unfortunately they didn't have any change nor the credit card machine was working, but we figured a way out to get our change. We were even upgraded into a 6-bed-room instead of a 10-bed-room without paying anything. After another 10 min. walk we found our hostel almost directly.

It looks like a construction site and there's just a printed paper on the door, no sign or something else. From the outside it doesn't look inviting at all, but our room was clean, the washroom and toilet new and renovated and there were lockers as well.

The price we paid was absolutely perfect for what we got, but i have to admit we are quite modest, because we usually don't spend a lot of time in the hostel on holidays and rather discover the city.

One negative aspect is that there isn't a real check-out, you just have to throw your room card into a drawer, out of which everybody could pick it up and go into the room. In my opinion this isn't safe at all and was quite a big disappointment.

I stayed in this hostel Nov 13-14. It was cold and there was no heat because "we didn't expect it to be this cold and I don't know how to turn it on" seriously?! Reception is a 15 minute walk away and there is no safe or lockers to store valuables. There are major renovations going on and if you wanted to sleep past 8:30, you'd have to deal with loud construction going on. The bathrooms were some of the best I've seen at a hostel and the rooms were clean. There was no wireless and the one computer which has painfully slow internet access. It was an incredible location, and this place has a TON of potential, but it's not there yet. I wouldn't stay there again until construction is complete and then I'll reconsider.

Also, I was told that in the next week there were not enough people staying at this hostel so they'd be moved to the other hostel where you check in - this is 15 min away walking and is NOT the same neighborhood.

Room Tip: Wait until construction is done!

LE ROY D'ESPAGNE is a good place and thanks to good service of Luigi he made up for the rude service we had at Rose Blanche. The food was excellent too.

i am a travel journalist and i have been all over the world, and the staff at the hostel grand place really take the biscuit as the worst staff i have ever met. the manager (a spanish or mexican guy) was very nasty to my family and friends when we arrived to check in. when we told him that he was the rudest man we had ever met in the service industry, he told us he didn't care if we stayed in his hostel or not and i quote, "i have two hotels and they are both full so i don't care if you stay here or not". he told us that his cleaners had not showed up for work that morning, and that we could get out for all he cared, he doesn't need us. he called my mother a [--] as i left the reception area. all of this in front of other customers with young children. true story. you have been warned.
