“Great food but average service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

Wataro is probably the best authentic Japanese restaurant you find in the area. They do not have a lot of tables so make sure you book one to avoid disappointment! Their sashimi and noodles are excellent despite the very average service! The staff should learn how to smile for sure... Anyway as long as the food stays this good, I will go come back again!

“Very disappointing service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2012

I've been to this small restaurant a few times since I came back to Belgium (from Japan).
Definitely this is not the place I was going for the atmosphere: food is prepared with acceptable quality by a real Japanese guy (beware of the many fake Japanese-Chinese restaurants which are popping up in and around Brussels). Don't go for the kara-age though... oily, served with bones and tasteless. Better stay on sushi, sashimi and (at lunch) chirashi, all very good and fresh.

I wrote "I was going" because I think today I was there for the last time. We arrived there around 13:15 without booking and the restaurant was full. No problem, we waited. When two tables were finally free at 13:40 (one booked for somebody to arrive later) we tried to sit but we were refused the service due to "too many others still to be served" and "maybe we had to wait until 14 or 14:30". Having a 2 years old child which had been waiting with us was not enough for the owner to treat us with some more care...

I am sorry to say that Japanese customers are treated in a different way. However, if they feel they don't want so many customers, I'll be happy to head for somewhere else and recommend others to do the same.

“Wataro - as authentic as you will find in/near Brussels”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2012

This is truly excellent Japanese cuisine. The menu is substantial and varied with some unusual dishes - enough to explore over at least 10 visits. The fish is extremely fresh and well presented. The cooked food is also very good. The restaurant is simple and unpretentious, always absolutely full and invariably with some Japanese diners (the neighbourhood has many Japanese firms and the Japanese School of Brussels). It is extremely good value for money compared to another comparable restaurant in Brussels - Nonbe Daigaku (I also recommend). One can also eat at the bar.

YOU MUST BOOK IN ADVANCE.

The one area for improvement is the service - one of the waitresses is somewhat cold, unsmiling and seemingly indifferent - however this should not put you off - the food arrives fast and as soon as you taste it, all of your worldly worries will simply evaporate. And you will be back for sure! You'll average EUR40 per head with sake/beer and a good number of dishes.

Suchi, sashimi and other meals are absolutely outstanding. True Japanese food and service.
