We were really looking forward to staying in this interesting and quirky hotel which we saw had been well recommended by other travellers on TripAdvisor. What we got was the worst hotel experience of our lives.
When we arrived at 2pm there was a very large group of young people, maybe 50 or more, all trying to check in at the same time. The young people were happy, excited and noisy, as young people are inclined to be. We have absolutely no objection to this but it seems to us to be a mistake for the hotel to expect that such a large group of boisterous young people can be accommodated compatibly with a few more elderly guests who generally seek a bit of quietness and a peaceful night's sleep. ,
When we eventually had the opportunity to check in, after nearly an hour of waiting in this noisy and overcrowded lobby, we asked the staff if the hotel would be quiet overnight. They assured us that it would be quiet and said that the young people were going out for the evening. If they had told us that there would be a loud party from midnight to 0300hrs we could have left and found another hotel. In hindsight this would have been a much better option, except that we were told by the reception staff that the hotel would be quiet.
Instead of a peaceful hotel stay we got just the opposite. After checking in, the lobby had become empty so we took the opportunity to have a relaxing drink at the bar. As soon as we had ordered our drinks the young people started to return to the bar and lobby area and the noises became quite unreasonable. They were shouting to and fro across the lobby and over our heads to organise themselves into activity groups, and then started blowing through party whistles inside the lobby area and all around where we were sitting. The hotel staff seemed to ignore this inappropriate behaviour and made no effort to preserve the peaceful and dignified ambience that is usually found in a hotel lobby. Again we asked the staff if the hotel would be quiet at night and again we were assured that it would be.
What happened that night was irresponsible by the hotel and led to us having an almost entirely sleepless night. From about 2300hrs onwards the young people we getting ready for their party and there was a lot of excitable calling out to one another between rooms and along the corridors. This is not unusual behaviour for a large group of young people; the hotel staff could reasonably have anticipated it but they appeared to do nothing to manage the noise on behalf of guests who were trying to sleep. From midnight to 0300hrs there was a party with music that was intrusively loud. Sleep was impossible. Clearly, the hotel staff knew that there was to be a late-night party with loud music and should have told us what to expect. Then from 0300hrs onwards there was more ebullient behaviour outside our room as the excitable young people, now hyped from their party, did what young people can be expected to do – they ran, called out to each other, talked loudly in the corridors and generally made a lot of noise. We telephoned to the reception desk but it appears that nothing was done to manage the unacceptable noise.
Let us say again that we do not object to young people having fun and behaving as young people always will. Our point here is that if you fill the hotel with a very large group of young people who have no intention of sleeping, and a few elderly people who expect to go to bed at a reasonable hour and have an undisturbed night, then of course you are going to have some very upset guests.
We did write to the manager and he initially offered us a full refund, but after mistakenly believing that we had already written a TripAdvisor review he then reduced his offer to a half refund. We will not be intimidated by this and have written this review knowing that the result may now be no refund at all. We much prefer integrity and honesty ahead of a little money, and hence we submit this review in good faith to tell other TripAdvisor members what happened to us.
